Hard SF with strong contemporary relevance

Stevenson is a fan of real SF. He loves the mechanics, the structures, the how-does-it-work of it all. In Horizon he gives us new technologies, including one that that enables real-time communication over vast distances -- handy because events back on Earth matter to the crew of the Magellan. That crew is what the story is about. Their mission is to find a replacement Earth, for reasons that all but the most tragic of climate-change deniers can understand. How the diverse group of scientists and technocrats from different state-groups on Earth continue to collaborate once things start to happen is the central question. And what does their behaviour reveal about the stresses back on Earth? Finally, what role will Earth, so remote in both time and distance, play for the Magellan, as it scours space looking for a new home?

    Deep space and politics

Interesting examination of ethical and practical issues of exploring for a new home for humanity. I appreciated the thought that went into the imagining of the ship and it's features. The interplay of the characters was a big part of the book, but I found some characters (Lex) irritating.

    Very interesting ethical debate

SF with a twist and a future scenario to ponder. I was intrigued by the characters and the problems both human and scientific they faced.

    Imaginative story

My first Keith Stevenson read, and I'll be reading more. The story was mostly plausible and a good sci-fi read, although it left me wondering how smart the lead characters really were on a couple of occasions.
