    Excellent alternate history novel

This is an alternate history novel where the point of divergence is the parents of Iosef Djugashvili, later Joseph Stalin, move to the USA when he's in utero, and "Joe Steele" gets elected president in 1932. Things go about how you would expect... Harry Turtledove's latest novel is written in his usual style, and it suits this tale, which covers a much longer timeframe than any previous Turtledove novel (with the technical exception of Homeward Bound). His portrayal of an American Stalin is an interresting and disturbing one, and although Uncle Joe is still Uncle Joe, he's an oddly less bloodthirsty and aggressive one - the difference between growing up in California and Georgia, one supposes. As a lover of alternate history and a longtime student of Stalinist Russia, I found this book fascinating and very entertaining. I recommend it.
