Old friends from the 90s revisited

I first bought Mackenzie's Mountain as a double book along with Mackenzie's Mission in the early 90s as a Harlequin trade paperback on the discount table at my local Kmart; I think it cost the grand sum of $2. Wolf Mackenzie jumped off the page - silent, brooding, maligned...Wow! What a hero! Mary was, and still is, the perfect foil for him - tiny, dedicated and a fierce defender, determined to see people for their value, not their façade. She sees beyond the taciturn man whose appearance is used against him to the hurt man who has been used as the scapegoat in Ruth for any crime against women because of his half Cherokee heritage. Mary is a teacher after my own heart because she pushes Joe Mackenzie to go for his very lofty goal (pun intended) and isn't afraid to use her teacher's finger; mine was a teacher's death stare! The development of their relationship is a surprise to each of them, Mary being such an innocent in the world that Aunt Ardith created around her and Wolf with too much knowledge of how the world, post-Vietnam, continued to treat those perceived as dangerous outsiders. Mary is convinced that whatever Wolf went to prison for could not have been true and the rightness of her convictions is seen through the way Wolf whispers to horses and innocent heroines. The events that change Wolf's standing in the little town of Ruth are quite dramatic, so much so that the title of hero sits well on his shoulders but it's a sad thing that it has to come to that for attitudes towards Wolf to swing 180° and for him to have the respect he deserves. It was some years before the entire family got their stories - Maris' story is the last and Chance's story can be easily missed because its title - A Game of Chance - has no reference to the Mackenzie name. At least one of the Mackenzie offspring does not have a book, which I seem to recall Ms Howard explaining in an author's note at the end of one of the last books, a disappointment because I waited and waited to no avail. As a series, the Mackenzie family stories are full of vignettes which pop into my mind from time to time while other books are gone from my memory as soon as I have finished them. I have been waiting for these stories to come out as ebooks for a long time; it's been well worth the wait.

    Mackenzie's Mountain

Read this story a number of years ago & now have it on ebook. Great story could not put it down until finished. Can't wait to read the rest of series, even though each book stands by itself just fine it's nice to see the connection. Pls keep on writing.
