    Interminable

I read Lord Perfect, and was mildly entertained, so upon finishing it decided to give another of Loretta Chase's Carsington Brothers a try. People often say that a book is "unputdownable" - this is one I put down constantly. In utter boredom, in frustration, in having let my mind wander for the previous pages without absorbing anything only to realise I hadn't actually missed anything. The primary tension of the plot, and what is keeping the two characters apart is just so flimsy, that after reading through them having the same exact argument a few times without presenting anything new, and without ever advancing any attempts at solutions, I completely stopped caring about them as people. I read on only to see how the problem would, in the end, be resolved, and it's such a throwaway in the final chapters, and presented as such a simple answer that you can't help but doubt each character's intelligence for not seeing it sooner. Ok, I know that in the end this book is just an excuse to present a brave hero and a beautiful heroine in lace and frills gallivanting together and eventually getting married, meant to satisfy a craving for an idealised form of romance, unattainable in real life. But my itch remains unscratched. Two stars.
