    I love a brave higlander!

I spent my week vacation relaxing and reading Vonda Sinclair’s entire Highland Adventure series :) I love how she writes her characters – she is able to weave depth, emotion, love, and despair masterfully throughout her books. She can also set up a great scene – I almost feel like I’m in Scotland, right in the middle of all the action. This is Dirk and Isobel's story. Dirk has closed him self off due to betrayal early on in his life. When he meets Isobel and offers to help her, he soon becomes bewitched. Likewise, Isobel comes to realize that Dirk is a man that she could truly love, but he has thick walls around his heart. Dirk kind of holds a special place in my heart. He's completely inept with women, and doesn't have any friendships or relationships, so he's clueless. Vonda really knows how to weave a tale, and I felt like I was right there with the characters as they walked along. It's rare to find a writer with so much depth. I'm a Vonda Sinclair fan for life!

    MacKay to the Rescue

Isobel gets a painful reception at the MacLeods but Dirk rescues her. But Dirk has enemies that want him dead. It seems love for this pair is impossible, for multiple reasons. It makes for a good tale and there are lots of good folks to like.

    Dry, hard to maintain focus

I found the narrative dialog a little too dry. The constant banter about propriety just didn't have a good flow to me. I had to force myself to finish the book because I paid for it. The attempt the author made to have her characters sound like they truly belonged in the era, didn't fit at all. "Unhand me" is just childish to be placed in a book based in 17th century Scotland. Then a phrase like "gives me the creeps" pops up and everyone knows that's a very 21st century saying. I did like the way Isobel was painted, mischievous, and daring to some degree. The tale wasn't told good, but with a bit of restructuring I think it could have been an even better story.
