Social commentary while still being a fun read

I've really enjoyed this series so far (I own both that are currently published). It's excellent fiction; strong storyline, interesting and engaging characters and love story, happily ever after without allowing it to fall in their laps AND without a stereotypically all-knowing villain keeping them apart. But it's not just a novel; the author manages to write a fun tale while still making a clear social commentary on the plight of minorities and the heinous practice of child marriage still allowed in several states in the US. While one of her characters does make choices for her child that many of us cannot fathom making it's clear why she does so, that she has her child's best interests at heart, and that the child has a say in her circumstances (and that the say will be completely in agreement with what the mother has chosen, which is why the mother chose it!). I'd like to have seen a bit more from the male leads point of view, but you can only put so much in a book and with this one it made sense to focus on the female lead. Absolutely will read again and will buy every book in the series as they come out.

    Not a standard paranormal romance

Not what I expected at all, though I don't think I'm disappointed. The paranormal romance is there (sweet rather than steamy - we get told about the amazing nights but don't actually get to read about them) but the meat of this novel is really a social commentary about how we treat minorities, about discrimination, and about equality (and how we're not there yet). It is also very much the story of how much a mother can love her child (that really got to me, which is why I liked the book regardless of it not being what I expected) and while I concur with other reviewers it is a bit long, and perhaps could have been edited one more round, I thought that just meant I got value for money. The author is definitely a storyteller, she has a delightful sense of humour, and I will read more of her work. If you're looking for a more general pnr, this might not be your cup of tea. If you like strong independent female main characters and don't mind some social commentary to broaden the scope of your book, I'd recommend this. I'd say it's not perfect, but certainly enjoyable.

    Funny & Fun

Could use some more work on the editing, but not too bad. More importantly, a funny and charming, feel-good story with happily ever afters galore.

    Null and Void

Good story though a little longer than it needed to be.
