    Stunning - vintage Stephenson

Stunning book in two distinct parts - the first is a near-future disaster story and the second a far-future human society. My only real criticism is that the story would have been more gripping told with a more complex time structure. I would (if I had Stephenson's talent) have started in the far future and told the present day part in flashback gradualy revealing how the future society came about. Stephenson's trademark is making ideas thrilling. There is a stunning example at the start of the second part - we know our heroine is going to orbit, but we just cannot see how she can possibly get there in a fragile glider assembled from parts she's carrying in a backpack. The answer when it comes just blows the mind (though some research reveals it is not actually Stephenson's own idea but one that has been seriously studied and verified by real aerospace engineers).

Good Science with a good story

This book balances detailed description of the science with character depth and a story line that spans millenia. If you arent into hard sci fi you may get bored with info about functional robots and orbital mechanics but push through as the story is good. Despite a possibly gloomy start there is hope for us and science is key.

A positive view of our future

Earth is destroyed, though not by human agency. Eons later, it is restored and reinhabited, through centuries of dedicated work. A bracing and eventually moving story. You will need some patience to work through its enormous length and detailed descriptions, but it's worth your while. Recommended to science fiction fans and incurable idealists.

Excellent, well engineered, high concept Sci-fi.

Stephenson balances the inevitable technical explanations for which he is well known, with interpersonal interactions that break them up nicely and give the reader plenty to attach themselves to emotionally. Despite the rather heavy premise, and it's difficult to imagine one heavier, the overall feel is optimistic, which from my point of view at least, is a welcome change from a lot of the overly nihlistic stuff out there.

    Decepción. Hueco.
