    Emotional story with unique characters

Sound of Silence is a collaborative hurt/comfort romance from two authors I’ve read previously. I enjoy both authors’ styles, so I was excited to delve into this story after reading the intriguing blurb. This is technically a Young Adult romance as the characters are still in high school, but it doesn’t read overly immature and packs the intensity Miss Kerick consistently delivers in her solo projects. It's definitely a book that makes you think and explore some unexpected emotions and responses to traumatic experiences. Sound of Silence follows Renzy, a selectively mute high school senior, as he navigates life and meets a pair of siblings who offer friendship, understanding, and love. He eventually hooks up with the brother, Seven. While the romance is a significant focus of the plot, particularly in the latter half, the characters’ stories and growth command the center stage for the bulk of the book. The authors do a great job developing both Renzy and Seven, describing their thoughts and emotions in ways that made them relatable and gave a voice to the motivations driving their choices. I thoroughly enjoyed this emotional story, especially as details of Renzy’s past came to light. While I loved the character’s personal development and the resolution of the book and relationship, I wish there had been a more significant connection between Renzy and Seven. I believed them as a couple, but it didn’t feel quite as tender and loving as I wanted considering how emotional so much of the story was. I think fans of hurt/comfort romances who are looking for a different sort of plotline and unique characters will enjoy Sound of Silence. *Reviewed for Alpha Book Club*

Beautifully written and impossible to put down

Young adult, coming of age, romance, and a bit of mystery all rolled into a beautifully written story that is absolutely impossible to put down. I don't read a lot of young adult, but the premise for this one intrigued me and once I started reading, the story was so compelling that I couldn't stop. There are parts of this one that are quite heartbreaking and even infuriating as Renzy's story unfolds. Then we have Morning, who is dealing with her own trauma, and her brother, Seven, who hides his problems behind a fixer attitude. The story is not just a search for answers about Renzy's selective mutism. It's an intense and emotional tale of friendship, love, healing, a bit of justice, and finally, hope. This is my first read from these authors, but it certainly won't be my last.
