    Bethlehem murders... by Matt Rees

This is the second Omar Yussef novel that I have had the pleasure of reading. I read the eBook version but I have since bought a print copy as I want to re-read it. Omar Yussef is a Palestinian school master who has turned detective. The novels explore the lives of ordinary Palestinians against the backdrop of the Israeli occupation. This book is based on actual events in Bethlehem. A Christian family is trapped between the savage conflict between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli forces and their love of the land of their birth. Omar Yussef tries to save the widow of a member of the Martyr's Brigade from a revenge killing. Her husband has died during an Israeli night raid. She was a pupil at his school. Another former pupil, George Saba, who is a Christian, is accused of betraying the dead fighter to the Israelis. Both the widow and George and his family are pawns in the vicious rivalry for the leadership (and the associated spoils) of the local Martyrs Brigade. The reader shares the tensions within Omar Yussef's own family as he struggles to prove the innocence of one of his favourite pupils when the community is baying for the traitor's blood. This book describes the passion and pain, the courage, cruelty and frailty of very human characters in horrible circumstances.
