    Marriage under the microscope

This is less of a novel than a pseudo-documentary. The story of Rabih and Kirsten's relationship is punctuated with a fly on the wall analysis, during which the author presents himself as an all-knowing, expert observer of human experience. Although, there are some snippets of wisdom and moments of humour I felt I was being lectured to. The analysis feels rather self indulgent, with de Boton wanting to flaunt his knowledge of the human condition. The tone is predominantly pessimistic.

    A must read

The book can be easily titled "The handbook of love and marriage" because it packs, with appropriate illustration, the necessary wisdom in approaching love and relationships from a constructive, tolerant, understanding stance. The author makes no effort to sugar-coat his arguments, which gives the book a much-appreciated flavour of authenticity. Some of his ideas have, at times, enraged me by stirring up feelings of helplessness and rebellion, a want to fight off the inevitability he mentions; but in the end, I had to concede to the argument that there is pain after love, and there is love after pain, and it's ok. Learning to live with our and the other's imperfection is a great shortcut to a serene life.
