    Little too depressing for me.

Found the story depressing. The author's style of writing was okay, but I did not feel the need to to turn the page.

Did I like it? Yes...no...maybe so?

I'm very torn about this book. After a slow start, I found myself unable to put it down, but when I finally did after finishing it, I was left with a feeling of "Huh....". First for the positives. I really enjoyed the writing and the imagery was fantastic. I could completely visualize the setting of the British Columbian farm during WWII. The imagery was so strong that the farm was almost a character in itself. I also enjoyed the combination of the story with a supernatural/native folklore element. A different take on the typical Canadiana literature. What didn't sit well with me, is that there were all these fantastic elements and some very disturbing goings on, but there never seemed to be any resolve to the situations the protagonist Beth, encountered. I don't like novels that end with everything nicely rectified and tied with a pretty bow. I can deal with loose ends if it lends itself to the story. When the novel finished though, I had a very strong sense of not being satisfied. Maybe that was the author's idea of resolve; that there wasn't any. At the same time, despite all the unanswered questions, there were a lot of situations that seemed to just magically take care of themselves without much difficulty despite their impact throughout the story. The Coyote for example. Without providing a spoiler, the Coyote terrifies Beth, and is the nucleus for a host of other characters problems, but is dealt with in the end with barely a murmur. Almost like an afterthought. The same with Beth's love interest, Nora. Again, there is all this build up, and then Beth's and Nora's decisions on continuing their forbidden (and historically frowned upon), lesbian relationship is decided upon with little impact or fanfare. Lastly, a minor but still off-putting element was the very graphic and detailed descriptions of the killing of farm animals. I'm an animal lover, so I found these very difficult to read. It would have been slightly more palatable if it was the slaughter of the animals for food, but this wasn't the case. Despite my aversion, I understand that it lends itself to the telling of the story, certain characters and the setting. In summary, I wasn't sure if I would like this story at all. It took me a while to get into it, then I did and couldn't put it down, with it culminating in the feeling of being let down and wanting a bit more resolution. For that reason, I gave it 3 stars. I feel it's bit too low, but 4 would have been too high, so 3 it is.
