    Good, but could be better

Simmons is brilliant, but he really needs to cut down on the word count and write a little tighter. I was engrossed the first part of the book, curious the second part, and wished it was over the third part. Regardless of the word count, the story is brilliant, if you have the patience for it.

Disappointing take on a terrible true story

The true story of the Franklin expedition to find the North-West Passage is one of the great tragedies of exploration and adventure. Trapped on the ice for years, knowing rescue was impossible, facing lingering deaths from the cold, scurvy and starvation, the plight of the 129 men who were lost with the ships Erebus and Terror needs no supernatural element to make it a horror story; Simmons decides the very real trials the lost sailors faced isn't enough, and adds a mysterious, ferocious demonic beastie to hound the luckless mariners to their deaths. The parts of the story dealing with the ordeal of surviving in the ice are suitably grim; the parts dealing with the battle against the the ice demon are unconvincing and not frightening - and totally unnecessary. Telling the true story of the dreadful end of these men, straight, would have been enough to scare any reader witless.

    Masterful and moving

This is a very long book. The description of the privations and perseverance of these explorers is so interesting you feel the cold just reading it. The introduction of the terrifying presence which follows the expedition may seem unconvincing and unnecessary but in the latter chapters it makes sense and comes together in a celebration of the Inuit culture and successful survival in this extreme climate. Very clever and also very spiritual.
