    Women of the Castle

The reader is taken on the extraordinary journey of 3 women. The main character, Marianne a life of privilege and education married to a man from upper class German society displays so differently from the other 2 women who enter her life through circumstances that only for WW2 would probably never had happened. Benita marrying Marianne’s best friend from childhood in peacetime may have been part of Marianne’s life for awhile, however the marked difference in their upbringing and financial status would have made for a difficult and strained relationship. Ania enters the story through Marrianne's efforts to repatriate those who had assisted her husband in any small manner from interment camps. Both Ania and Benita from improvished backgrounds are believers of Hitler’s words of a better life. The slow revelation of the untruths and propaganda are slow to realise in their understandings while Marianne, her husband and friends are unbelievers from the beginning and “many of their friends had known Hitler was a lunatic, a leader whose low brow appeal to people’s selfish, self-pitying emotions and ignorance was an embarrassment for their country”. All these revelations are still apt today, books written to remind us of evil perpetuated on fellow human beings should serve as a warning. Women of the Castle was well researched and is quite a complex novel. It takes the reader over several timelines into modern day where freedom, forgiveness and a good life make for a postive ending.
