    Wonderful.

I had so much laughter and tears at Ellie's tale of this warm loving and accepting family and friends, at their triumphs, failures, joys and sorrows. This book is a delight!

    Brilliant read

What a fantastic book I couldn't put it down. One of my three favourite books. Only trouble is I'm sad now that I've finished it. Many laugh out loud moments and many sad moments. I'd advise you to just read it.

Pretty good, but be better with a lighter touch.

Sarah Winman has a way with words, no doubt about it, and this story abounds with twists and turns, some completely unexpected and cleverly different. Her description of a Nativity Play had me crying with laughter and was lovely, but having sunned me in the sandpit of joy she then tipped me into a cold, muddy puddle and that's where I remained for much of the book. What spoiled it for me was the melancholic undertone and the constant air of dark secrets lurking that one dreaded discovering. Had there been enough lighter moments to balance the mood and bring relief it would have been much better, Sarah. I also found the style to be a bit monotone, with even the dialogue having the same, crisp, punchy delivery across all characters which robbed them of colour. In the real world, some people are wordy, some broad, others tight, but few of those differences were brought out. So, for instance, couldn't Alan have had a touch of the 'Carnish drawl, m'dear'? Despite my reservations the book held my interest and kept me coming back time and again, right through Christmas, and that hasn't happened to me for some years either! So, a good read that could be so much better if the characters were painted on a broader canvas and your plot lines not so crammed with ingenuity and brooding. With some revision you could turn this good book into a brilliant one. Go to it, gal! Oh, and by the way, why does almost everyone have gay tendencies??
