    When the Lights Go Out

When the Lights Go Out is the latest story by Mary Kubica. Ms Kubica does an excellent job of weaving the present and past together to keep the reader turning pages. Some twists.I was given an early copy to review.

    mediocre

Not her best effort. I rated it "okay". May give this author a pass in future as I do not see any change in style.

Mind bending anticipation at each turn.

3 Stars Review by Morgen Late Night Reviewer Up All Night w/ Books Blog When the Lights Go Out by Mary Kubica encompasses how grief can shatter your reality. Jessica grew up with a single mom and loves her wholeheartedly. When her mother is diagnosed with cancer her world slowly crumbles around her. She doesn’t sleep and it starts messing with her mind. She is determined, curious, and strong. Eden is a new wife who wants nothing more than to be a mother. Her and her husband try everything they can to get pregnant with no success. Her need for a child starts to become an obsession and their relationship suffers for it. She is caring, compassiionate, and determined. Jessica’s mother’s cancer has metastasized. Her mother’s doctor says she doesn’t have much time left and Jessica has been up for days living off coffee, not wanting to miss her mother’s final moments. Secrets come to light and her world starts to fall away beneath her feet. Eden is struggling with her feelings of inadequacy and hopelessnes because of her infertility. It is hard for her to cope with seeing everyone around her being a parent when she can’t, and add on top of that they don’t seem to appreciate the joys of parenthood as she would. When both of their realities are altered how do they endure the unknown? Find out how these two are connected in this story full of intrigue and suspense. The storyline is refreshingly new. We see the story from Jessica and Eden’s POV giving us a fuller perspective. It keeps us guessing the whole way through. The story unravels slowly and the amount of detail slowed the pacing a bit. The characters weren’t given enough depth for me to truly root for them. The twists I never saw coming. Some parts were so unexpected they completely blew me away. Definitely worth the read for the mind bending anticipation at each turn. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

    Kubica's best book to date!

I first want to thank the publisher Harlequin/Hanover Square Press and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. Within the last year I have read all of Mary Kubica's novels. Sometimes I really like them but sometimes not as much. This book is my favorite Kubica book that have read thus far. With Chicago as the backdrop like most of Kubica's novels we follow Jessie Sloane whose Mother passed away while Jessie fell asleep in the hospital bed next to her. Her Mother's last words to her were "Find yourself" and so Jessie sets out on a journey to find herself. The problem is that at every turn Jessie is hit with one obstacle after the next as she finds that she has been declared dead many years ago. It must be a mistake, right? On top of that she is not sleeping. Jessie has not been able to sleep since her Mother died as she is wracked with the guilt of not being awake when her Mother passed away. As her lack of sleep begins to turn her days and nights into waking nightmares her world begins to fall apart more and more. She begins to question everything she thought she knew of her life. We also hear from another woman named Eden in Wisconsin as we read her diary and see how her life and marriage begins to fall apart because of her desperate need for a child that she seems to not be able to have. Both Jessie and Eden are likeable and interesting characters and my heart broke for Jessie almost constantly. As someone who has lost my Mom I identified with her sorrow and grief as it was just her and I our whole life. I felt the pain that Jessie was going through. The novel is well written with a dreamy quality that pulls you in and keeps you interested until the end. Now, for the end. I will be including a spoiler of sorts down below if you don't want to be spoiled please don't not go below the ***! *****************************************************************Spoilers Sorta************************************************************************* I did enjoy the ending a lot. I did figure out the twist about three chapters away from the end and am kind of surprised that it took me so long. Though, as I said I really .enjoyed the ending I can imagine that there will be a lot of people very upset with the twist. Let's just say that there will be readers that may be tossing the book across the room.

    Edge of your seat fiction

This is my first Mary Kubica novel and I can't wait to read her previous work. This book has completely bowled me over. Due to the convoluted plot, it is difficult to discuss the storyline without divulging too many details. Jessie Sloane is at her mother's deathbed. While grieving her passing, she finds a new home and applies for college. The college notifies her that she needs her social security number which leads her to realizing that she does not know who she really is. The novel alternates between Jessie's present life and the life of Eden twenty years before. It is up to the reader to solve the puzzles that link these two women. Just when you think you know Jessie's identification, the author takes you down another rabbit hole. What a great read. Thank you to Harlequin-Hanover Square Press and NetGalley for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
