    Contemporary Romance

Another K-9 romantic suspense story with great human and canine characters! Carly Harrington-Reese saves the life of Noah Glover and his K-9 fire/explosive sniffing partner, Harley. She then gets caught up in solving the mystery of who tried to kill Noah and Harley and just why anyone would want to. With an arsonist on their heels, an arson investigator being fed erroneous clues and Carly’s business to get ready to open there is little time for Carly and Noah to spend exploring their attraction for one another…but they did find some and when they did…oh my! I think one of my favorite parts of the book had to do with kisses and the variety of them that exist in the world – might even want to google to see if there are more ;) Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. This is my honest review.

    4.3 : +Suspense / -Romance, K9.

    > > Judging a Book by it's Cover < < Vibrant, catches the eye. Good use of color and choice of font. Synopsis sounds like another winner for D.D. Ayres! Looking forward to reading the newest book in the series! > > Looking Deeper < < Third person POV. Noah's a former cop, former firefighter, now explosives K-9 handler / Arson Investigator. When he is found unconscious and his dog, Harley's, found tied up nearby in an empty store next to the one Carly just readied for her grand opening, Carly assumed he was homeless, drunk, and or high. But when a fire erupts while she's trying to rouse him, the stakes become deadly and saving their lives just painted a giant target on her back as well. Having read the other books in the series, I could not help but feel that this was a darker, edgier, and grittier story than what D.D. Ayres has given us in the series up 'til now. Arson, attempted murder, obsession, stalking... it's all there. Throw in a delusional pyro and you have a lethal combination of elements to create one hellava Thriller / Suspense packed with plenty edge-of-the-seat action, some romance and some K9 inclusion. I really loved how Carly and Noah were together, their chemistry was fantastic and their compatibility was Flawless (pun intended). The secondary characters ranged from vital additions to enjoyable, but unnecessary, page-fillers; they were diverse. Dialogue was mostly natural feeling and the interaction was believable, usually. The plot was exciting, it had plenty of dimension and depth. The flow was quick and evenly paced, allowing you to fly through the pages quite easily from the need to know what would happen next. There were a few conflicts along the way, but it seemed neither cared as they both did what they wanted to do, regardless of the consequences. Ultimately, the climax was dynamic. Predictability was pretty low. The conclusion is mostly solid and satisfying, allowing for an implied HEA. I wish there would have been a little more to the epilogue. I was interested in seeing a little more on how well Carly and Andy would interact as well as how Harley would take to them being together in a more permanent manner. I think I would have liked to have seen Durvan eat a big ol' bowl of CROW after all he'd put Noah through. Overall, it's a really good addition to the K9 Rescue series, but only if you like your RomSus a little lighter on the Romance and a little darker on the Suspense. . Rating: [R] ~ Score: 4.3 ~ Stars: 4 (4.5, if I were able) ========================== ⭐ ⭐ **** Disclosure of Material: I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the Author/Publisher with the hope that I will leave my Unbiased Opinion. Loved!

LOVED this book! Carly is a former fashion model that tries to rescue a crying dog and ends up rescuing the dog and an unconscious man. She later learns that the man is an arson investigator that attempted suicide....except Carly doesn't believe it and the man (Noah) denies it. The two of them have an intense connection that practically ignites the pages of the novel. As an arson investigator, Noah has a K-9 dog that can detect explosives. The dog really comes to life in the book and even has his own back story. One of the things I particularly like about this author's books is the integral role that dogs play in them. Each book gives insight into a different way that dogs can assist and/or enrich our lives. This is a fast paces romantic suspense that fans of the genre will love. While it is part of a series, it is a stand alone novel, however, it is so good that you really owe to yourself to read them all. The author is on my must read authors' list.

    2,5***

The story takes off with tension and fear filled moments in the darkness of the night where lives are at stake and I was hooked. Immediately my expectations of the story went sky high and I wish that wouldn't have happen because the next morning things got awkward. Noah is in the hospital and turns out this gorgeous hero of the book is very abrasive with sharp cutting edges when relating to others around him. At first, I tried to put it on the condition he was in and to the events the day before but it turns out that's just how he was, rather arrogant and rude person who only soften when around his son. Yes, Noah has had it tough, with many setbacks and tragedies, but this is just me, I don't have much sympathy for unnecessary rudeness in any form. And then in walks Carly, the heroine who saved Noah's life the night before. She has found out about a rumor that Noah might have tried to kill himself at the fire. And Carly walks in yelling at him, not listening to a word Noah has to say, just being judgemental, rude, overbearing, and rumbling all over this person whom, to her knowledge, tried to kill themselves the night before. Who, what, I mean what kind of person does that?! A little compassion, consideration, kindness, and humbleness go a long way. So the impression the main characters made on me wasn't that flattering. As the story unfolds the reasons for their behavior comes clear, but not justifiable in my mind. Their connection to each other is running as hot and heavy as their tempers. I wasn't prepared for their relationship to turn physical at the hello. It had no foundation, no base to built on, it was basically a hook up in the heat of the moment. After that, I eagerly looked for 'more' in their connection, I really wanted to like them as characters, like them together, and root for them, and their nearly managed to pull me on their side. The epilog didn't work for me, it just proved to me that what I had thought at the beginning was actually correct. So the romance side of the story was a wash for me, furthermore, it made my mind wonder while reading at the cost of the suspense side of the tale. The story is told from many different points of views, I like it when I get to see the culprit's thoughts, to better understand their reasons, how delusional they might be, but in my opinion, it gives more depth to a story. What I wasn't prepared for was Harley's point of view, the K-9 dog. I loved him, he is a trooper with his eating disorder, but I had to go over the pages couple times to confirm it really was Harley here talking and thinking. It was just distractive and didn't really give anything to the plot. The suspense behind the crimes was alluring. The mystery held my interest so that I kept reading despite the other issues. The strain at the arson investigator's offices was concerning and the possibility that Noah might not win the fight against the villain chilling. And as lives are at the stake again, the actions of the offender petrify. So no, this wasn't my favorite story in the series. Someone else might not find the issues I faced a problem at all, might even enjoy them. But from my end, the suspense saved some of the character falls, making the final score ~ Two Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
