    Expect a book hangover

I received an ARC for an honest review. I fell in love with the world building in this book...the beautiful setting, the depth and variety of characters, the complexity of the relationships, and how amazing it is to see the progression of Elloren's growth--and that was an important part to me. Their violent history and racial divides set up a complicated backdrop to this coming-of-age story. It was hard not to empathize and draw comparisons to reality, but with Elloren's resilience and steadfastness, you can't help but feel hopeful and have faith in people. I'm still thinking about these characters thirteen hours as I write this, and all I want to do is grab a cup of tea and delve right back into the book. I rarely want to reread a story, but the richness of this one has me thinking I had to have missed something the first time through. Well, that's the excuse I'll be using to reread it anyway. Book 2 cannot come fast enough!

“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.” ― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray An author ought be allowed to create complicated flawed characters that delves into dark issues and allow us to explore the failings of humanity safely in story. I thought this went without saying. From Scrooge to Scarlett O’Hera, from Darth Vader to Heathcliff and all the dynamic characters before and after, the author, if they choose, can help us examine our own biases, hate, fears, inadequacies privately and allow us, if we choose, to grow. It is a kindness, and a necessity. Yet I have seen multitudes of reviews on this book accusing it of being racist, which lead me to believe three things. People need to spend more time in discussions about what they read to help them unpack and process the story, by seeing a story through multiple perspectives you are given the gift of new ideas, rather than just comparing it to the thoughts and experiences you already brought with you. Second, it seems that people have become too comfortable with throwing the word racist out, which is not only painful and uncharitable, it’s also lazy and dangerous. Lazy, because rather than debating about the messaging and purpose of the content, people throw out the word racist like a show stopper, allowing no other option to be true and therefore killing intelligent, critical analysis, which leads to the danger. These same people then stand behind the word racism as a weaponized disease, if you attempt to engage in discussion or disagree you too are now a racist. Last I came to see that people think it’s acceptable to criticize something without fulling thinking about it, or in this case, finishing it. Given the story arc it seems impossible that people could have finished the book, witnessed the characters growth, and then have claimed it was racist. Therefore they either did not complete the book, or they need more practice with plot analysis. I believe the former seems more likely. F. Scott Fitzgerald believed; “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.” In other words, have your ideas challenged, live and work through the cognitive dissonance, and discern how and if your ideas have changed.

Excellent writing, good story, very fun to read.

The character perspective was extremely well written. Story matter was fun to read, and the situations were believable. Not a complex story, so good for younger readers and people looking for something easy to digest. Read it all in one sitting, so excellent hook!
