    A journey of belief

I'm rather mixed about this book. On one hand, the premise and story is amazing. In a clockwork universe where proof of intelligent design exists, a boy on the cusp of manhood is must save the world. The story then takes off on an amazing journey. I don't want to give anything away, but first part of the book itself is worth the price of admission. On the other hand, the characters in the book aren't quite so fleshed out. In a story like this, I expect to see compelling characters, but most remain flat, even the protagonist. The narrative seems more adept at towards pushing the protagonist from one amazing location to another, the emphasis on an outward journey rather than an internal one. In most cases I wouldn't complain about having too much imagination served up, but the narrative does seem jarring at times, with scenes jostling up against one another. There is a lot to like in this book, but it's execution could have been much better.
