Where There's Smoke, there's (literally) fire

01.06.15 Firstly, the review written below was posted on Goodreads and Chapters.Indigo.ca. I read the entire story on the date of release and wrote it after. Also, now I that I have actually read Leaving Time as well, this is on Where There's Smoke only and has no hints or spoilers on Leaving Time. ~~~ 05.19.14 “LIAR.” Spooky and very haunting with the twists and turns that loyal readers of Jodi Picoult (myself included) would expect in one of her books but in the size of a chapter. Serenity Jones is a psychic and she will be seen in Jodi’s anticipated new novel, Leaving Time, to be published this coming October. Written as an “appetizer” to tide/ wave us over for the upcoming release, this will want you hyped up for the book every Jodi fan is waiting for. Although I have not read Leaving Time at all (or even through an ARC), I believe it is a very good glimpse of what to expect in the new novel. In retrospect, the story shows the difficulty of Serenity owning her, call it what you will, supernatural, paranormal or special power/ talent. However, it will then show the good sparkle in the ugly fog she believes that’s clouding inside her gift. Best of all, and what should make you want to read this ebook, is the fact that it’s free.

    Disappointing

Unfortunately this book really leaves you with more questions than answers. Although it’s a short story meant to engage you on a different level it left me feeling incomplete and lost rather than found.

Interesting, but felt a bit pointless

This was an interesting story to read. It’s not your typical Jodi Picoult story. Her books usually start off slow and take some time for me to get fully into. This one was captivating from page 1 and kept my interest throughout. It was much faster pace than her other books. I’m not sure I believe in mediums or psychics, but that wouldn’t prevent me from enjoying a story. I don’t believe in vampires either, but have enjoyed books involving them. I enjoyed this short story, but I’m just not too sure what the point of it all was. It felt more like a prequel. Yes, it would make a fantastic prequel to Serenity’s own full length book! At the end it says this character makes an appearance in Picoult’s book, Leaving Time, but that’s not the same.

    Sad.

I loved the book Leaving Time so much and especially lived Serenity. I was excited to read this book but it really left me with more questions and a great feeling of disappointment. The book has poor character development. This book explains the downfall of Serenity with her psychic abilities but it's also explained in Leaving Time. I love the book but I huge part of me expected more about serenity. I want to know about her psychic advantures and how she worked with her spirit friends. Spoilers alert but I want to know how she get rid of the poltergeist or even how she copes after being thrown into the mud. I NEED MORE.
