Stunning at every turn! Thrill Ride!

Christina McDonald tests the levels of trauma someone can handle in one lifetime without splitting at their very core in her novel “Behind Every Lie”. A magnificently complex, gripping and unexpected family story that left me breathless. Stunning at every turn because of the thrill ride I was on! With such flawless storytelling! ....waiting patiently for Christina McDonald’s next book announcing proudly I’m an über fan!!

    Complex Thriller

This complex thriller kept me guessing! Just when I thought I had some things figured out, there was another twist. It’s a great opening premise, the main character, Eva, is in the hospital after being struck by lightning. Her mother was murdered the same night and Eva can’t remember anything. This frustrates both the police and Eva. All the clues point to Eva being at the house that night, but is she guilty of the crime? Eva sets out to discover the truth, including a visit to London, her mother’s original hometown. Along the way, the reader isn’t sure if her paranoia and strange behavior are symptoms of the lightning strike or is Eva pretending that she can’t remember? I didn’t quite know who to trust and there was quite the web of deceit! Some secrets are buried very deep for good reason. There is an alternating storyline with Eva’s mother from the past and we start to get some clues that there are secrets in Kat’s life and it seems that someone doesn’t want Eva digging too much into the past. As Eva digs deeper and some memories start to return, the story builds to a stunning conclusion that I did not predict! This is another mother-daughter domestic tale from Christina McDonald that I truly enjoyed. The pacing was excellent, and it is definitely a page-turner.

Unpredictable, Quick-paced, and Keeps You Guessing

Behind Every Lie is my favorite kind of thriller: unpredictable, quick-paced, and keeps you guessing until the very end. Told in alternating first-person between Eva in the present day, and Kat in the past, Behind Every Lie, mainly follows the two characters before and after Kat’s murder. When twenty-eight-year-old Eva wakes up in the hospital after being struck by lightning, she finds herself the prime suspect in her mother’s murder the night before. But Eva can’t remember anything about the previous night. As she retraces her steps and digs deeper into her mother’s life, she finds more questions than answers. Did Eva kill her mother? I loved both Kat and Eva’s perspectives, however, I definitely related to Kat more. Eva, I found to be a bit whiny and helpless, though that slowly changes over the course of the novel. I also was not sure if Eva was a reliable narrator, given she’s been struck by lightning and seems to not trust anyone including herself. I was highly suspicious of all the supporting characters in the novel, especially the detective in charge of the case who seems hellbent on Eva being the murderer. This story pleasantly surprised me. I was not sure what I thought it would be when I first started, but it quickly developed into quite the page-turner. Thank you to BookishFirst and Gallery Books for the review copy!
