Feehan was born in northern California to a large family including 11 girls and 3 boys. At age 16
she worked at a library, which stoked her lifelong passion for reading and storytelling.
Feehan's paranormal romance novels feature vampires, shape-shifters, psychics, and other
supernatural elements. She published her first book, Dark Prince, in 1999, launching the Dark
series, which is also known by the name of the race of vampires it features, the Carpathians.
Feehan's other successful series, Leopard People, Drake Sisters, and Ghostwalkers were
launched in 2002-2003—a period during which she also published 5 installments in the Dark
series. For this reason she's known for her prodigious output and for sustaining several
storylines within the paranormal romance genre. Her most successful later series include
Torpedo Ink and Sea Haven/Sisters of the Heart; these are spinoffs from Drake Sisters, which
ended with the seventh installment, Hidden Currents in 2009.
In 2022 her son Brian Feehan published Harmony of Fire, a paranormal romance about a race of
magical humans called the Etherealists who are hunted by beings called the We. A sequel,
Harmony of Lies, followed in 2023.
