  • Life Affirming

Shafak creates a sensory journey through the streets of Istanbul through the memories and relationships of a clinically deceased prostitute resting in a dumpster. As farfetched and macabre as this appears superficially, this is a powerful and elegant novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. It reminded me of Mistry's A Fine Balance in its exploration of friendship and the discovery of individual truths. It is a story that stays with you.

  • Fabulous characters and story

Uplifting and sad all at the same time. Those who are disadvantaged are the most humane and kind.

  • A New Beginning from an End

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The various charters entwined in Leila's life, provided a vivid insight to the true humanity that exists in our world. The English prose is delightful, engaging and very descriptive. Many times I felt as if I was there with them all. A refresher that there is goodness in all everyone. One just has to be prepared to see it.
