  • 4.5 stars-Ticked all the boxes for Christmas short

I really enjoyed this short Christmas story. The characters were interesting and personable. They both had a backstory that provided depth, but it didn't feel like there wasn't enough time to develop their story. I liked how they contrasted but came together as a couple. Oscar's dislike for the holiday was an unique character trait for a holiday centric book, but I liked how the author had it play out. I was a little nervous when I first read the blurb that it wouldn't be light or would focus too much on the "scrooginess" of Oscar, but that wasn't the case at all. I found myself smiling most of the way through and swept in by the characters and story. The romance leaned toward the whirlwind sort with lust building to more, and I was impressed how much emotion and chemistry the author packed into a short story. There wasn't a skimp on the sexy scenes either, yet they worked within the story so it didn't feel like sex just for heat's sake. The writing itself was very good, descriptive but with a brisk pace that kept me engaged. The story had a good conflict with a clean resolution, and it didn't feel fake or manufactured simply for angst. I'm a sucker for good banter, and the dialogue between Oscar and Nathan was fun and witty. This was such a pleasurable short story, and I'll be adding this author to my "read more" list. If you like Christmas stories with some heat, a good story and characters, and some fun dialogue- this is definitely worth picking up. *ARC provided by NineStar Press. • Found myself wishing for MORE MORE MORE!

    > > Judging a Book by it's Cover < < Nicely dressed, good-looking man holding a package. Pine bough border (and title) are the only indicators that this may be a Christmas short story. Font is a nice, clean script, however - while the color blends nicely with the scheme, it fails to stand out in any way. Synopsis sounds enjoyable and slightly scrooge-like. > > Looking Deeper < < Third-person narrative. Oscar's a financial officer that had a childhood full of reasons to hate Christmas. Despite bouncing through the foster system, Nathan's optimism and joy are a constant presence and it's that magnetic personality that pulled at Oscar. They were attracted from the start and their relationship heated rather quickly. This short story began on Black Friday and ended a few days BEFORE Christmas. In that time, we were introduced to a small handful of secondary characters, briefly. Interaction and dialogue was good. Plot was dynamic, for being as short as it was. Flow was fast and smooth. Conflicts were resolved naturally. Predictability was low. The conclusion provided an implied HEA or Happy-For-Now ending. Overall, it's an enjoyable lunch-hour holiday story. .
