  • Not For Me, But Not Bad

I want to clarify something out of the gate: This book was not for me. I really hoped it would be, but despite a strong prologue, I just couldn't get into it. That said, I'm not going to try and turn anyone away from it. In fact, if you read the blurb and think this book would be worth reading, then definitely pick it up. It's well written and interesting, it just didn't grip me my mind the way I hoped it might. The story was well written and paced enough that everything was laid out for an admittedly intense ending. That said, I did feel like there was a lot of information that was glossed over and I would have liked a bit more insight into it. Generally, I don't think it played out into the world as much as it should have. There were a few action scenes, but few of them felt really important to the story, save for the final one. I wasn't sure where some storylines were going, and am not sure they paid off in the end. The characters... I'm conflicted on. Simmon was likely my favourite, and Amerdan will be interesting to follow since he's clearly got a screw loose, but I couldn't really connect with the other characters. Miranda was fine, for some portions of the story, but I found Caldan to be too much of a Gary Stu. Aside from one brawl and a few stabbings, he was literally perfect at everything. Ultimately, I felt like this book was more buildup than anything else. The sequels could take off running and dive right into the further lore of the world, but I just don't think this series is for me. Again, it's not bad, and I rated it so high because I would love for others to experience it based on its good writing. I'll always recommend a good fantasy romp!

  • A Crucible of Souls.

I wanted to like this book. There are the bones of a good story in there, for sure. But it's deeply buried beneath tortured and derivative writing, poorly developed characters who perform seemingly meaningless actions and reactions, and a plotline that marches in a completely linear direction, with no foreshadowing or buildup. The main character goes through what seem to be a completely random sequence of events, half of which are unnecessary to the story. The supporting characters exist, but none of their back story is ever given. The greater world around them is constantly hinted at, but in a broken and circumstancial manner that never explains how everything fits into place. Finally, all the characters act as if they're set to the lowest common emotional tone. This was a chore to read, which is a shame. The implications of the story provide a lot promise, but I won't be following the series for fear of further disappointment.
