    Fascinating

Like all of Poul Anderson's books, this is very well written. It is a mixture of speculative science and fantasy. I loved it!

    Superb

Vivid, memorable characters. Reworking of the English Civil War in an England where Shakespeare's plays were all historical fact -- such fun! But the absolute best element is the language. Scenes described with a simplicity that is genius. Dialects rendered and accents recreated accurately and consistently throughout. Word play to match the bawdiness of the time followed by the courtliness of princes. So many fantasies use language that rings false and over describe everything. This book, on the other hand, never hits a false note and is a joy to read. Often I was left wondering how much was Poul Anderson and how much was an alternate time line Shakespeare.
