  • Disappointing

I was charmed and entertained by Becky Chambers' Wanderers series and hoped for the same here. Instead, I found the first chapters irritating. Then I assumed it was written for younger readers and tried to judge it accordingly but without much improvement. Other readers have commented on the clumsy style used to convey a "non-gendered" narrator. I found myself repeatedly halting to figure out whether "they/ their" referred to one or both characters. If this is story is meant to convey sympathy for troubled youth, I acknowledge the effort, but it isn't great writing and is sometimes coy and tedious. One for loyalists, I'd say.

  • Brilliant book, exciting start to a new series

As always, Becky Chambers writes some amazing characters and an incredibly wholesome yet well layered story. This one was very short and sweet but I really enjoyed learning about the new world she is setting up for the series. There is a lot of interesting commentary on issues including environmental justice, climate change and wilderness and she delves deep into questions like: "what is my purpose?" and "what will make me happy". A Beck Chambers book always leaves me feeling mentally stimulated and eager to read more (not to mention usually quite fuzzy and warm inside as her characters are delightful). This book is a very intriguing start to a series I am very much looking forward to.
