    Rom-com with some substance

I had never read this author before, but the blurb caught my attention and I was very much in need of a happy, fun romance. I enjoy romantic comedies, and I’m always excited to see m/m rom-coms. Adulting 101 surprised me. When it began, I thought for sure I made a mistake. I had no idea how to handle all the extra that was Nick, and frankly his voice and views made my head spin and had me cringing at times. I’m glad I kept listening though, because that voice ended up making Nick’s complex character come to life in a way I couldn’t imagine and I quickly realized the author did a fantastic job channeling his big personality. I loved the humor that was included throughout the narrative and within the dialogue. It was never too over-the-top so as to feel campy or ridiculous, but managed to make the characters personable while maintaining the youthful, fun vibe throughout the book. Even though I initially found Nick odd and it took me a bit to adjust to his tone and the narrative style, I couldn’t help but love him. He was a lot, but he was also loyal, sweet, and had a magnetism I couldn’t deny. I also really liked Jai. His personality contrasted just enough with Nick to keep things interesting, and I absolutely loved these two as a couple. I enjoyed seeing the relationship and their individual personalities grow over the course of the book. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the conflicts that were teased out as the book moved forward. Nick’s anxiety over college and the future was very relatable and the seriousness of that conflict made for a nice juxtaposition to the more light-hearted tone, ensuring Adulting 101 was a fun but well-rounded romance. If you’re looking for a something that is as sweet as it is funny, I’d definitely recommend this title. *Reviewed audiobook for Alpha Book Club*

sweet tale of the newly adult

I really enjoyed reading this book. The leads are in totally different places in their lives. It’s a coming of age story for Nick and kind of a reevaluation of some things for Jai. I love how it manages to be a M/M romance without the focus being on their sexual orientation, acceptance of it and such. I think this is a story that’s relatable to many. Nick has grown up privileged. He knows it. But now that he’s an adult, he doesn’t feel equipped to handle life even though he really doesn’t have an excuse. Adulting is hard. I totally agree.
