    An exploration of the unknowable.

Faced with a world where bizarre and terrifying events are the norm, VanderMeer creates the quintessential unreliable narrator in The Biologist. Her exploration of Area X is interwoven with her observations of who she is and who she's becoming. Detailed and beautifully descriptive prose creates a lasting and haunting strangeness that most contemporary science fiction is utterly incapable of. This fully deserves to be considered one of the great classics of the genre.

    Stick to #1

The other two cheapens the story. a perfect little puzzle with no tied up loose ends, more questions than answers and a perfect encapsulation of the awe, mystery and divinity of science and our universe. The third one particularly is awful.

    Symbiosis?

This well written story takes the reader into the realm of biological fantasy. It gives a new depth of meaning to the concept of the web of life and the interdependency all living things. This, first of the trilogy, is almost too esoteric but I look forward to reading the other books for clarification.

Ballard meets Dick in area X

Wonderfully written, a surreal dream in the flavour of Ballard.

    Annihilation

I can’t say too much without spoiling. This is my second read-through and the story is crafted so intricately and full of sensuous detail. I really can picture it playing out in my head.
