    Enjoyable older fantasy

4.5 Stars - This older fantasy was on my to-read list until I came across the trilogy in a used bookstore during my Victoria vacation. It was interesting enough that I flew through the book captivated. Talia is a different type of character than I am used to reading about, especially with the Holderkin aka 'communal/colony' type of upbringing with abuse that bothered me a bit. Some viewpoints I didnt agree with and the whole common-talk of sex by thirteen year olds was unusual but I loved the idea of Heralds, Companions, gifts, and learning about Talia's fate. Although overall Talia having such a rough time had me feeling so bad for her but I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book. Rolan is my fav character for sure. :) #plumreview

This look at finding oneself in difficult world, resonated with my own painfully awkward adolescence. Yet magically besieged Valdemar and especially the mystical Companions helped me escape to that very wonderful world that Mercedes Lackey weaves with her words.

A book I return to again and again; a classic of the Valedmar series and one that I read as a pre-teen and loved (and still love!). A wonderful introduction to the Heralds of Valdemar world, where young Talia must find her place and purpose in the kingdom.

    Great book

As a reader of DAW's Michelle West, I took up Mercedes Lackey solely that it was the same publisher. I don't regret the purchase or the read.
