    A book about life

This is a book about the lives of two families who lived next door to each other. The author tackled a difficult subject (mental illness) and handled it with compassion and understanding. Loved the way the characters evolved as they aged. This book surprised me in a very good way.

    Disappointing

I did start this book twice after reading just 10% because I did not know where the story was going. Even at 20% I had no idea. At 30% I was bored. At 50% I was still waiting for something special. I did struggle through out the book. It was hard to stay engrossed. I was totally detached from the characters. The writing is not bad but to me there was no heart. As some reviewers said “there is a lot of telling and no showing “. I needed raw emotion. This is a drama after all. So many great reviews but this one did not work for me.

    Time well spent

Kept me guessing, and assuming incorrectly, how the characters would play out in their relationships. Grateful to see mental illness approached in this sympathetic and unassuming manner.

    Good read, a little long

The tagline associated with this book is what drew me in, comparing it with This Is Us, one of my favourite shows. I didn't really see that comparison play out, but this was an enjoyable read nonetheless. The characters were relatable, likeable and compelling. The story was engaging enough that I was eager to see where it went. The struggle for me is that there is something about this book that doesn't quite resonate and I can't explain the why or the what. The best way I can illustrate this is that I finished the book 12 hours ago and I'm struggling to remember how it ended.
