  • Immensely satisfying

The first C.J. Box I read, THE HIGHWAY, I found riveting. Naturally, I dashed out to the library and snapped up BADLANDS ©2015, the next in the series. BADLANDS is even better, but don’t start here because the long story (with recurring characters) is much richer. Twelve year old Kyle Westergaard dreams of getting out of Grimstad, but he witnesses something dangerous. Grimstad is having an oil boom, so there’s no housing for love or money. With money comes drugs and criminals, headaches for new Deputy Sheriff Cassie Dewell. I inhaled this story. I built a Cast of Characters for BADLANDS because I often do and it is attached on the page on my website for this review. (Good luck finding it!) A day or two after I’d finished this immensely satisfying story, a copy of BADLANDS ©2015 by C.J. Box arrived in the mail, courtesy of the publisher. So, somebody definitely wanted me to read this book! And so should you ;)

  • What a page turner

I stumbled on CJ Box books at a book sale and have purchased many of the books. This book was a page turner from beginning to end.

  • Badlands

The book opens with a subject that is peripheral to the books main plot: no doubt a thread for the continuing series. Then it ended with another thread which we will, no doubt, unravel in future books. Even so, I enjoyed this book. Interesting setting, complex characters, good pacing.

  • Frosty justice

C.J. Box does it again. Realistic story, nasty bad guys of all types. Believable tale. Perfectly described frigid environment. A good read.

  • A book about North Dakota !!

Now in the midst of an oil boom which has attracted ruthless thugs and all sorts of lowlifes. To be honest there were a few there to begin with, but I like to think of North Dakota with nostalgic eyes for its lefse -making grandmothers. There is a lot of violence and some of it does not move the story along; there is also the recurrent theme of the bent cop which has come up in all the Cassie Dewell books, so much so that it has almost become a stereotype. What I did like is how efficiently Mr Box is able to incorporate youngsters and teenagers in his novels, here Kyle Westergaard, a special needs but extremely resilient 12-year-old. And to conclude, touching tributes to Mark Twain and particularly Teddy Roosevelt, a North Dakota hero.
