    Charming

A lively tale with an ensemble of well-drawn characters; not just the main ones, which made this more well-rounded than a lot of books.

    Fantastic

I loved it! This was my first by this author, and I’m so glad I read it. I loved the close friendships and bonds between the siblings, and the delightful and steamy romance. Also, please sign me up for these candlelit dinners with heretical debates and raucous laughter! Such a fun story to get lost in.

    Heyer like never before

Charles takes some bits of Georgette Heyer's Regency classics, some great characters, some queerness, tosses it into a country house, and shakes it up. The result is a wonderful froth of seduction, revelation & recuperation with lots of gothic complications. Consent has never seemed as devastatingly sexy as Charles makes it here. I hope she has more of these tucked in her reticule.

    Glorious fluff!

Fans of KJ Charles will be shocked to hear that for once, there are absolutely no deaths, horrible or otherwise (OK, to be fair, they're almost always horrible in her books - eels, giant rats, torturers in the fog, freaky singing jars, you get the idea). But don't let the non-existent body count put you off! This delightful send-up to the genre delivers a diverse cast (race, sexuality, politics, religion, you name it), a naïve, virginal hero (and his much less uptight sister), tender romance and kinky times (unfortunately offstage) and polyamory, and so much delightful fluff that it's a great choice for a bit of escapist indulgence.
