A laugh-out-loud funny historical romantic comedy!

This wonderful book is filled with an incredible cast of quirky characters! I love both of the main characters especially. Many of the names are so unusual that just saying them out loud put a smile on my face. I have no idea how the author came up with them. Miss Permilia Griswold has found her own way to make her life more tolerable. She has even found a way to feel that she is contributing to the world. I was extremely amused by her antics. It was very clear from the beginning that she was in a very real sense a fish-out-of-water. As the story progressed more and more information is revealed as to how she was thrust into such an awkward position. Mr. Asher Rutherford is truly considered one of the highest level of those in high society. He is keeping his own secret that he feels would ruin that standing if it ever got out. I think that his choice of who to have as his closest friend brought me much amusement. The plot of the story is delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this marvelous story. I was kept guessing about many aspects of the suspected danger Asher was in simply because of the twists the story took. I received a free copy of this book from the author. Another excellently crafted story!

Wallflowers Rejoice! Another excellently crafted story by master storyteller, Jen Turano! March 1883 – New York “Contrary to the prevalent thought of the day, I’m not a lady who feels as if my life has been ruined simply because I’ve obtained the somewhat undesirable label of wallflower.” –Ch.1 Permilia Griswold is sort of a gilded age Cinderella in the sense she puts up with the whims of her step-mother & step-sister. She is awkward in social situations & really could care less about gentlemen, balls, the season, etc. She was raised by her father, traipsing all over the country for his mining business, until he decides she needs a woman’s touch in her life. He finds & marries a woman of society, intent on changing everything about Permilia, while spoiling her own daughter. Permilia has a keen sense of fashion, business, & charity. She loves the Lord, & seeks wise counsel when needed. She also has a few secrets. Her interpretation of the Go-As-You-Please Quadrille had me laughing out loud. Asher Rutherford is a self-made, affluent businessman, with an excellent sense of style, & owns one of the most successful department stores in the city. He leads a predictable life, & is quite content mingling in society, attending his clubs, & going about his business day with little interruption to his schedule. However, each encounter he has with the unusual Miss Griswold leaves him perplexed & asking questions he’d never considered before. “A second later, he found himself taken aback when Miss Griswold thrust a dainty hand his way, seemingly unconcerned yet again with the idea that ladies never, as in ever, initiated an act that would consist of them hauling a gentleman to his feet.” –Ch.3 Harrison Sinclair is Asher’s dear friend who is one of those men rather unaware of his handsome mystique. I suspect he is color blind, with all of his odd combinations of clothing, & he seems to have a genuine concern for those around him. I found him extremely intriguing. “He grinned. “I know most dangerous men are assumed to drink coffee, & black coffee at that, but” – he shuddered – I can’t abide the stuff.” Bonus points for Harrison, because I loathe coffee too! –smile. He adds much to the story, & I can’t wait to learn more about him in future books. Miss Gertrude Cadwalader (a mouthful of a name to be sure), is a recently acquainted friend of Permilia, through their mutual resignation to the wallflower section. She is great fun, as she takes matters in hand when needed, & looks like a laughing stock much of the time due to her employer’s odd ideas. That employer being Mrs. Davenport, who is one adventurous older lady. Oh, my! Yet another character I want to get to know better!! Jen Turano really has a way with supporting characters! Miss Henrietta & Miss Mabel are delightful, albeit persnickety sisters that add wonderful fun, mystery & more questions to the story. They are also extremely interested in tea! Yay!! “That hobby, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to learn, given the interest we’ve learned you share with us, is searching out & collecting new blends of tea.” –Ch.13 Permilia picked up her cup. Raising it to her lips, she took the smallest of sips, blinking in surprise a second later. “Good heavens. That’s delicious.” –Ch.14 After reading that, I had to stop & go make another cup of tea! Now, of course, there’s at least one villain. & of course, I will not tell you who he/she/they might be. But, suffice it to say the mystery kept me guessing as it unraveled along the way. Jen Turano is my absolute favorite author. Her style is so unique, & the laugh-out-loud moments are divine! I have read every single one of her books including the free novella prequels. She never disappoints. 343 pgs In exchange for my honest opinion, I received a copy from Bethany House Publ. which I am privileged to provide with no other compensation. Another Winner!

I just closed the cover on this book, another hugely wonderful winner from the USA Today bestselling author, Jen Turano. I first read a novella by Jen Turano and was immediately certain that this was an author I wanted to follow. Always. My opinion has only been cemented. I have never, ever been disappointed in a Jen Turano novel. This novel is the first full length one in Turano's 'Apart From The Crowd' series, following a novella. After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, Miss Permilia Griswold has finally figured out a way to pass the time at all the New York high-society events she attends. Under the pseudonym 'Miss Quill', she is the author of society gossip columns filled with tidbits only an insider in society---albeit one on the fringes---would know. When she overhears a threat against Mr. Asher Rutherford, the owner of one of the most up-and-coming department stores in the city, she's determined to warn him. But the irritatingly handsome man doesn't believe her, leaving her no choice but to take matters into her own hands. What she doesn't anticipate is that she'll end up putting herself at risk in the process---or that she and Mr. Rutherford, a man with secrets of his own, just might end up joining forces after all. Jen Turano's novels are a total delight to read, making this reader simply just feel good! She takes women characters, and makes them strong and with a mind of their own and puts them into the most outrageous circumstances you can imagine, then adds more characters to the mix, creating the most fascinating mayhem you can imagine. She includes a wonderfully intriguing mystery, one I had no clue of. Turano will have you laughing out loud all the way through her books. I was reading on my treadmill during one absolutely hilarious chapter and had to step off before I fell off, I was laughing so hard! It is a wonderful thing to be able to dive into such an amazing book, knowing that you will be entertained by Turano's special blend of wit, a wit that no one can match. I enjoyed every single minute! Now I can't wait till the next novel. *I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publishers. I was not pressured to leave a positive review and my opinions are my own.

    What A Wondeful Story

Not only is Behind The Scenes a fine romance, it has a lot of humor; I laughed repeatedly at the antics of Permilia Griswold. Seeing high society from her perspective was refreshing. Permilia's awkward, uncoordinated, and let's face it, walks to the beat of a different drummer. As a result, she and others like her, the ones not as pretty or poised, or like Permilia hear a different drummer, find themselves the wall flowers of the balls. How hurtful this must have been for the girls who did not have Permilia's fortitude. Furthermore, I loved the characteristics Turan instilled in Permilia's character; I knew I would love to have her as a friend. Not only smart, she's definitely not a shrinking violet; she would be a woman's activist in today's world. Permilia has a secret which no one is aware. If revealed it could lead to disaster. Born before her time, Permilia is a shaker and mover. The funniest thing I have ever read was Permilia's gallop through the ball room during the Go-As-You-Please Quadrille. I laughed until I cried. How proud Permilia was of herself when the dance finished! Asher was amazed, or was it appalled? Either way Asher was the perfect gentleman; a true knight in shining armor. Asher's character is a product of his time; women had a place and should not divert from their appointed place. However Permilia has a decided effect on Asher's attitudes as his character grew throughout the story-line. To say he's bemused by Permilia's an understatement. I could almost see Asher's head spinning around as Permilia ran circles around him. What starts as "what in the world" turns into "she is my world"! In concluding my reviews of romance novel, Behind The Scenes, I found the plotting skillfully; and the pace fast, smooth, and steady as Permilia turns New York society and Asher underside down. I would not hesitate to buy this book for my self or a friend. Behind The Scenes will give hours of relaxing entertainment. Additionally, I received this book from Netgalley and chose to voluntarily review the book/novel with an honest reviews for romance novel, Behind The Scenes.

Another great title from Jen Turano

Another wonderful Jen Turano novel. I just love her work. I loved Permilia and her "wallflower" status. Had I been born in late 1800's, I too would have been relegated there (if I managed to be in the TON, which is doubtful). And the things Ms. Turano puts her poor heroines through. I just love the scrapes they manage to get themselves in. I received this book from the publisher/author. The above is my honest opinion.
