  • Darl, gritty, and emotional

Stunning, mind blowing and intense - so loved this book! I mean, there were points were my heart was beating out of my chest I was drawn into the story and what the characters were going through. I had a serious book hangover from this one and even a day later, still woozy! How do you review it, because the story doesn't reflect the emotions, and that is what makes this book come alive, you feel for the characters but you aren't disgusted by them. It would be so simple to feel sympathy for Charlee and Jay, even Nathan, but they are so human in their actions and reactions, that sometimes you want to slap them upside the head as much as you want to hug them tight There is a link from the beginning to the end that will break your heart as much as fill it with hope, and it was a wonderful touch to show the road that Charlee and Jay had travelled If you want a sweet Cinderella story, this isn't it, but if you like things dark, gritty and emotional, you will thoroughly enjoy and devour this book as I have!

  • Not for me

3.5 stars Nice written story but too long for me. So much happened. Charlee is on the run for her ex Roy who treated her horribly when she meets Jay. Jay can't forget Charlee but when he goes back to her she's dead. He tries to forget her by using a lot of drugs and sex. They meet again after three years.

  • Beneath the Burn

This is such a beautiful story. Pam Godwin is an incredibly gifted author. Each of her books have captured me right from the beginning and never let me down. The strength and courage in her heroes and heroines is inspiring and incredible.

  • Brutality mesmerizing!

This author has an unique way of storytelling that is gut wrenching in its brutality but keeps me right there even through all the cringe worthy moments. The build of exquisite characters with unreal stamina and resolve to overcome horrible situations is terrific. In this one there’s Charlee, a young woman that has lived in slavery for too many years. During one escape she encounters an up and coming musician, Jay with his own demons. A connection is formed that helps Charlee through torturous days and lead s Jay to write songs that propels him to stardom. When they reconnect Jay is in a position to thwart Charlee’s jailer. These two characters are so broken but still strong and determined to overcome horrendous pasts. A terrific romance develops between Jay and Charlee as they help each other somewhat heal. Of course, Charlee’s nemesis won’t give up and it’s a fight to the finish. Such a good villain! There are a couple of fantastic secondary characters in Charlee’s longtime protector Nathan and Jay’s lead bodyguard Tony. Both a former Marines and have eyes for each other. FYI, Tony is a woman. This is not a story for the faint of heart. Enthralling storytelling and mesmerizing characters makes this a thrilling read. 4.5 stars
