    Reunions

I was delighted to see Kade and Christopher and Nancy again. They may have broken the "no quests" rule, but it was a delight to go on this one with them and Cora and Nadya and Rini.

    Wayward Children are fantastic

This series is amazing. Just when I think "this book is the best" along comes another in the series that I love even more than the last one. The Wayward Children need you. Keep telling their stories.

    Fun, Weird and Quick

A light (well for this series) chapter in the series which didn’t land as successfully as the previous two entries in the series, this still displays the strong whimsy and writing I’ve come to expect from Ms. McGuire. In my head canon, I consider this series a series of writing exercises that Ms. McGuire uses for a particular thought / fever dream / whimsy. This makes the books different in purpose though they share the same “universe” and some characters. This book is the most straightforward adventure story yet in the series. The kids undertake a mission to rescue a friend but its more Orpheus leavened with Candyland than I expected. The best way I could describe the vibe of this book is like if you scratched Strawberry Shortcake and she bled to death. Despite the (literally) fantastic worldbuilding this book suffered form a split of focus which was a shame. We have returning characters, three / four new worlds and mythologies, a PSA to avoid fat shaming, the place of death in life, sprinkled with a few more themes which I am missing I am sure. For the length of the book it was too crowded - the returning characters which I was more familiar with especially kept me from really engaging with the new characters. I didn't care for Sumi’s daughter or the mermaid character. In the end, this was still enjoyable if a little uneven. I would give this a 3.5 stars for some particular flashes of brilliance and the overall craziness of the candy world. Per my usual rules, I am rounding this down to 3 stars. (On a side note, this book did make me think of the limitation of star ratings since this was so much better than other 3 star books I have read recently. I would still recommend it especially if you’re in the mood for something weird and quick.)
