  • Fascinating Supernatural Thriller

Sebastian Arnett. Nature Photographer. Cursed by a spider demon named Empaya Iba. Sebastian has the ability to kill with his mind thanks to this demon, and he bares the demon’s mark on his face. A real attention-getter that strange tattoo. All Sebastian wants is to break this curse and be free, but Iba and other spirits aren’t going to let him just do what he wants. Add in a Chinese woman with her own personal agenda concerning Empaya Iba and you have a recipe for trouble. Because she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get what it is that she wants. Beware the Spider by David L. Haase is book two in his Black Orchid Chronicles series. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I was immediately pulled in. Sebastian is an interesting character. He’s a bit brash and when he’s angry…well, things go badly for those whom he’s angry with. He has found an oasis with Amanda, but he isn’t a free man, so his peace isn’t all his own as he’d wish. Throughout the story, I see how his life isn’t his own. The military is keeping a close eye on him due to his new “gift.” While this is a book with a supernatural twist, I could honestly see something like this playing out. The characters are true to life and gripping. I get to friendships build and even crumble in some instances. While Iba is strong the author shows that he’s not infallible. This story isn’t action-packed, but I don’t mind one little bit. The characters and situations drive the story as it seems that at times Sebastian goes from the frying pan into the fire. His relationship with Iba is curious to me. The author gives me some hints and a few flashbacks to what has happened in book one but mostly stays focused on what is going on currently. I got a variety of interesting characters that show that they are multi-faceted. On a level, I wanted more of Wan, the Chinese woman, because I was curious as to the spirit that she houses. I am happy to say that this book can be read as a stand-alone, but my curiosity is thoroughly piqued to where I want to go back and read book one. I’m eager to see how things came about initially with Sebastian and Iba. I am pleased to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I got exactly what the author promised in the blurb. I got a well-paced story with thrills, drama, loss, and suspense. The tiny little tidbit from Iba at the end gave me excited chills as it leaves you on a bit of a cliff hanger and makes me eager for the next book to come next year. Until then I will eagerly read the first book and encourage those who enjoy a supernatural thriller to pick this book up.

    Thanks for your feedback!
