    Thanks for your feedback!

    A breathtaking debut novel

This is an incredible book. I had high expectations when I discovered that it was somehow the first book from Madagascar to be published in English, and I was not disappointed. Beyond the Rice Fields is both a lesson in Malagasy history and a powerful love story, and the two are woven together perfectly. It centers on a slave and his master's daughter, and specifically their love for each other. However, as time goes on and the landscape of Madagascar changes, their lives become more and more complicated and the reader is drawn further in to the complexities of such an undiscussed historical era. If you like books that are simultaneously staggeringly epic and intimate (think War and Peace or Ceilia Valdes) then I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
