    Great literature

This is the finest work of one of of the most polished and profound of living writers. This novel along with "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" are two novels which should be on everyone's reading list.

    Birds without wings

The prose is poetry, the story huge, the history relevant. An amazing work of art. On my top 10 ever list.

    Lush and unique

I loved this novel. It’s about the lives of Christians and Muslims in a small town in South West Anatolia during the end of the Ottoman Empire. The myriad of townspeople’s voices tell their tales of love, war, racism, revenge, lust, politics, religion, and folklore. I met many unique characters, like Iskander the Potter, Karatavuk the Letter-Writer, Ibrahim the Goatherd, and his love Philothei – the town’s most beautiful girl. I also learned much about the birth of the Turkish nation. My only criticism is that Mustafa Kemal’s passages cram most of the politics and war into them, making them too dense to enjoy. They are off-pace with the rest of the novel.
