  • Absolutely EPIC!!!

WOW. Talk about a fantastic debut! Its premise sounded so inventive and I am a huge fan of Anastasia Romanov retellings, so I had to have this book. I hadn't expected to love it as deeply as I do! It has everything I love in a novel: amazing characters, an action-filled plot, dangerous and thrilling magic, betrayals and twists, snappy dialogue and banter, and a slow burn romance. Wen Zhao crafted a spectacular world with danger and grit. Its magic is unique and makes for exciting action scenes that had me biting my nails and hoping the main characters would survive. The story is compelling and moves through a massive world, and the stakes heighten with each pace. And the characters... I ADORE THEM. Ana is a strong character and absolutely terrifying when she wants to be, yet she is also uncertain and vulnerable. Her determination led me to root for her at every turn. Ramson is funny, charming, and has an excellent arc of his own. His path twines with Ana's and I really enjoyed how their interactions didn't seem like a forced romance. The spark is there, but they each have their own reason for acting how they do. I can't wait to see more of them. This book is phenomenal and I recommend it to anyone who likes dark stories based on historical events. It is a fantastic read and absolutely worth your time!
