This is the second book in a series but the first that I had read. Just by reading it, I could tell I had not jumped in at the beginning of the series but I didn't feel like I jumped into the middle of a long established series either. To be honest, I really enjoyed it. Although I didn't have the build up from the first book, I didn't feel like I needed it. It definitely had plenty of action and I enjoyed the concept of a novice who can't control her powers but has them blustering through with a single focus in mind and letting magic take its course. I also always enjoy a good "falling out of the sky" story. I enjoyed the characters and found them to be well-written and when betrayal hits, I definitely felt its sting. I liked the supporting characters and their feisty bickering. I also enjoyed how they could put it to the side to focus on what was important. This book was able to subtly address some real world issues without you even thinking about it. I admit to it having some shocking moments I didn't see coming that left me with a bit of a book hangover. I think I was still reeling from certain actions when I finished the book. I loved the concept of how magic worked in this universe and I didn't find a lot of contradictions in it. I really get frustrated when you think you have a handle on how the magic in a universe is set up but then it gets conveniently changed for an instance and then goes back to how you thought it should be. All in all, I found this a very satisfying book. I don't feel like I have to go out and immediately buy the first book in the series but I do feel the need to read the next one as soon as I can. Thank you to Robyn Bachar and NetGalley for the chance to read this story and provide my honest thoughts and opinions to oth
