  • A Series And A Book NEVER To Be Explored Or Read

When I read the summary of this story, I liked the premise and thought this looks like fun. However, "Never Date Your Best Friend", which is book 4 out of 5 in the "Never Date Series" by Jules Barnard, was alright. The way this series has shifted over the years while not changing the content of the publications, is quite telling and slightly deceptive. I haven't read the other books but they all have undergone a two name title change. This novel was first part of the "Blue Series", which may have focused on the passion aspect of the novellas and it was called "Blue Streak". Then, the book stayed in its place and was called "Hookup Master" as part of the "Men of Lake Tahoe Series", maybe with an alpha male theme. And now, the "Never Date Series" tries to be cute with its cover and such. However, NO ONE mentioned that this was a Young Adult and/or New Adult Series, because I am not a fan of that genre, whatsoever. Blue Casino Waitress, Nessa Villanueva (I never could find her last name, until I read another series book review), is young and stagnant in her career in Lake Tahoe, NV. After graduating college, this is the first job she took and has become comfortable. Although, there maybe something more to why she stays on, she has fallen head over heels in love with her male best friend. But there is no sign that it will ever come to fruition, so it is time to make a decision and move on, but is it the right thing to do? Blue Casino Blackjack Dealer, Zach Elliott, is young, decent and has his own dark secrets. His reputation is that he is a male Adonis who can easily charm the opposite sex, but he steers far away from commitment. He feels that he is not good enough and has always tried to over compensate in his friend circle. Ever since he met Nessa, he is protective of her and considers her his very best friend. But is that how he really feels or is he harbouring other types of emotions. Will he take the risk and find out, or lose it all? I did like the fact that these characters had very diverse and interesting backgrounds. However, there was no character development. I am not sure, if it was that way because this book was in novella format or because you had to read the other works in the series. Also, I didn't find that with these characters' heritage, enough sensitivity was shown towards their ethnic backgrounds. As typical young adult novels are, this book had the clichéd misunderstandings and not communicating aspects. The protagonists were nice but their thought processes were so warped, at times orthodox and repetitive. I could have improved this rating, except for this one major issue. One of the secrets that Zach has to deal with is actually illegal, heart wrenching, manipulative, predatory and could be a trigger issue for many. And it was not handled in the right manner and gives the absolute wrong message to young adults. I am not a fan of authors who are irresponsible and would make a feel a character feel vile and violated, when it is not their fault. Overall, I was not a fan and will not be reading authoress Jules Barnard books ever again. I cannot in good faith recommend this book, it was fine.

  • Great read

A sweet, fun, sexy novella . Zach is a player, or at least that is what he appears to be. Nessa can't help herself, she still wants him with all her heart. After one drunken night together, Zach knows Nessa is the one for him but will she stick after she learns of his past?? You will want to read this one to watch as Zach and Nessa realize that forgetting what someone was and focusing on what they can be is the way to true happiness. I recommend it!

  • Loved this tender, sweet friends-to-lovers romance

We've watched Nessa struggle in Zach's friend zone throughout the previous books in this series, and watching her find her way out was every bit as wonderful as I'd hoped. This is a shorter book, a novella really, compared to the other books, but it has the same emotional depth - if not the same complexity - and gives us both Nessa's and Zach's poignant vulnerabilities through the alternating first-person POVs. I truly enjoyed getting to know both Zach and Nessa better, and their romance hit all the right highs and lows. Their HEA was everything it should be. The secondary storyline about Nessa's advancing career also provided a delightful sneak peek at the couple featured in the next book. I can't recommend this series highly enough.

  • Enjoyable and lovely story

This was my first book by Jules, but certainly is not the last one! I loved this short novella. It’s perfect for an evening with a book and glass of wine (that’s what I did!). In here we meet Nessa, who is in love with her childhood friend, Zach. But she is tired. She is tired watching him and standing by, not saying anything when he is changing girls everyday. She wants to move on. What she didn’t expect is the fact that Zach has also feeling for her. But life is not so simple. He has a secret. A dark one and he is determined to keep it a secret. This was an amazing read. What I liked, that I didn’t get lost even though I haven’t read previous parts, but this story made me one-clicked an all of them :D
