    Interested, but not bowled over.

The premise was good and interesting... I liked the secondary characters a lot. The romance felt authentic generally, but something about the MC was kind of dull and slightly thick. There was a lot of telling and not showing and the pacing was slightly off. However, the plot was enough to keep me interested and I bought the other books in the series to find out what happens. Hopefully, Amelia will stop being so slow and naive in the coming books.

    Debut novel, my rear end!

This book was amazing. I was lucky enough to be able to read an advanced copy, and there's only one thing I can say about it: Holy Shiznit. This was Smith's first release, and there is not a single bit of this book that is "telling" of a debut author. Editing was well-done, the authors voice is clear, but not overwhelming, and the characters are fully developed and relatable. The romantic subplot is also well done, and it's so nice to see a relationship the mimics real life, which is funny as this is a fantasy novel. More detailed review to come, but if you like magic, destiny, love, best friends, betrayal, secrets, and a wholly unique world then this is a must-read.

I like it, except for the main character

I got this book because I was enamored by the cover. And also, this book started really interesting with the prologue going on like it did. I like the concept of the story and how it’s a different look on magical people. However being not a fan of whirlwind romances and instant attractions Amelia kind of got on the wrong side of me. Also for someone who’s suppose to be so powerful, I felt like the way she was described and how she was acting was pretty contradictory. Aiden didn’t help to make me like her either. His character and how it developed, in the end was predictable for me. Then Amelia made this stupid decision in the end which made me actually hate her. I feel like coming inside the book and ask her, ‘are you even thinking?’ So, if the author’s goal was to make me feel irritated with Amelia and her choices, I can say she succeeded. Micah, I don’t know if I like him or not but I don’t trust him. I mean, Amelia has this feeling of unease towards him at the start and then suddenly it took an 180 degrees turn and they are the new best friends. What was that? I thought heroines intuition play a part too and I was pretty sure Amelia’s was right and I felt like she failed me once again. I like Cole, though. I like the big brother that he is. I like Julia because as an antagonist she played the part well. I want to know how the prologue will exactly play out for her in the end. So yeah, I’ll probably still read the next one.

    You're BOUND to want more!

What a pleasant little surprise this book was! I don’t quite know what I was expecting when I started Bound by Duty, but it wasn’t the level of originality that I ultimately got! This was a pretty great start to what appears to be a very promising series! This was a unique, intriguing story that pulled me in right away and dragged me along constantly wanting more. The magical/ fantasy element was easily my favorite part about this book, I just adore the world that Smith created here! I love fantasy books to begin with, there are virtually no limitations to where the story can go, only to the author’s imagination. And my friends, Smith’s imagination is quite extensive. This world of mages and all their hierarchy had me completely enamored from the very start. I love that we were, as readers, taking this journey and learning all these things about this world right along with the main character, Amelia, who was almost as naïve about it all as we were. It made an instant connection between the reader and the main character, which is always nice. Very well done. I also enjoyed the intense element of mystery going on. Not only did we not know much about the mages, but we also never quite knew who to trust or what was going to happen next. It seemed as if everyone wanted to use Amelia to further their own ends, and that made it very hard to know who actually was telling her the truth or had HER best interests at heart. It constantly kept things interesting and kept me on my toes. I absolutely loved dogs in this story, their unique gift was incredible! Why can’t that exist in the real world?! For the most part, I liked Amelia. I have to say I liked her better by the end though, when she was a little more confident and strong. The other characters were pretty multidimensional and I have a feeling that we have only begun to scratch the surface of them. Amelia’s best friend Bethany was a breath of fresh air. She was strong, funny and a great friend. I honestly liked Micah, I thought he was interesting and he had an air of mystery that kept me intrigued. The same could be said for Aidan. I will say that I did find the romance between Aidan and Amelia to be a little immature, but realistically Amelia was kind of immature, thanks to the way she was brought up, so it made sense. Hopefully they will mature as the series progresses. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of these characters and their growing abilities, and just more of this magical world in general! This story did end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but it just ensured that I will definitely be reading the next book the minute I can get my hands on it! Originally, this was to be a 2 part review, and my happy a** (Jen) was just going to swoop on in and add my two cents but I’m pretty sure that Tricia said everything I wanted to and more. Literally felt the exact same about everything, from the magic to the men(i have a little less love for Micah *ahem* douche), the fantastically awesome dogs (I mean really, I loved them). I enjoyed how Amelia’s magic was purple and she was one of a kind. But one of the best things about this book was Bethany, she was such a breath of fresh air. She’s just one of those best friends that you can throw anything at and she’ll roll with the punches or pull your idiot a** out of whatever nonsense you’ve delved into. Can’t wait for book 2! We received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review By the way, totally thought this was going to be a porn/vamp book with added BDSM….. So glad it wasn’t lol

    Fabulous debut!!

4.5 stars -- Woosh!! Well, that finished with some tears (and in my case a round of bawling). This is another one of those books I got to read super early, so now I have to wait FOREVER for the next one in the series!!! But yes, you may feel free to be jealous of me. ;) I'm probably going to reread it, b/c I was trying to concentrate on giving line edit feedback, and I had family visiting, so I didn't feel like I got the full absorption experience. But even still, this was a fantastic ride. I remember reading a blog post (or something) from Ms. Smith about how the story was initially inspired by taking some elements from Rachel Higginson's Reckless Magic, and then saying "but what if *this* happened". And I could totally see some of those *initial* similarities, but then it just went in a whole new direction! But at the same time, if you enjoyed Ms. Higginson's Star-crossed series, then I HIGHLY recommend this book. More magic. More sassy characters. A completely different but also heart-wrenching love story.... It's funny, b/c the love story wasn't as big a part of this book as I had initially been expecting. It was enough to make me love the interactions between Aidan and Amelia (and enough to break my heart all over the place), but in the end the book focused more on Amelia's "coming of age" (or "coming into magic"). I can't even imagine what it would be like to have all this power, and have barely ANYONE to teach you about it.... And yet Amelia never became too whiny or annoying....when she had a break down, you were kind of sitting beside her going "you tell them!" Which is probably why I fell in love with Bethany so much -- she was everything Amelia needed in her first best friend. Seriously, that girl killed me. <3 her so much. I'm on the fence with Amelia's brother Cole. I loved how much he cared and took care of Amelia, but I was just as frustrated with him for thinking he always knew what was best. I also wasn't really expecting him to be such a big part of the story, but I really loved that Amelia at least had *some* family to turn to. Will be interesting to see what role he (and Derreck) play in the next books. On a totally silly and Lenore-specific squee note, I pretty much died of awesome overload when she could communicate with Charlie and Onyx in some way. I mean seriously authors -- I read so many paranormals with magical beings, and this is probably only the 2nd time they have been able to communicate in some way with animals. It's kind of a stupid thing to be excited about, but I seriously just about lost my shit reading those little parts. I'm pretty sure my husband just wants me to shut up about it already....;) I will say that either there was some fabulous foreshadowing, or I am an epically smart reader that has the same brain waves as Ms. Smith, b/c I totally called the Micah and Aidan twists!!! Go me!! In fact, I feel like I have way more theories about what is going on than even Amelia...she needs to start thinking like me, b/c come on!! Although I think I would love to know more in the next book about why everyone was so dismissive of Aidan intially (ie didn't detect anything). Could be some interesting stuff there.... And there goes my long babbly review. *shakes head* What you should take out of this: this book comes out in July, if you enjoy any kind of magical paranormal, then put this on your list. A great debut.
