    Magical Masterpiece

Breach of the Crust is the fifth book in the A Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series penned by New York Times Bestselling author Ellery Adams. I typically have very ambivalent feelings related to cozy mysteries featuring magic or the paranormal as some have been superbly written and others have been anything but. In Breach of the Crust (and the earlier books in this series) Ellery Adams delivers each one on the superb end of the scale! Having read the preceding books in this series, I found myself looking forward to my next visit to Havenwood to hear what adventures Ms. Adams' wonderful characters are up to. I enjoy Ella Mae LeFaye’s adventures as she is learning how to live her life without her magical powers. Even without her enchantment, customers eagerly visit the Charmed Pie Shoppe for a taste of the daily offerings. Beatrice Burbank, President of the Camellia Club, a group of high-society Southern ladies from the charming town of Sweet Briar, Georgia, has contracted Ella Mae to teach the members the art of making a pie. Ella Mae eagerly embraced the opportunity. To Ella Mae’s dismay, she finds Beatrice, floating in Lake Havenwood. Ella Mae quickly discovers the secrets hidden deep within the prestigious Camellia Club. In short order, Ella Mae comes face to face with her nemesis, Loralyn Gaynor. All of the characters are well developed. The plot is tightly woven with intertwined subplots. This cozy mystery is unique and entertaining. In Breach of Crust, Ms. Adams skillfully explores a variety of topics: family relationships, trust, friendship, power struggles within an elite community, overcoming obstacles, romance and the world of “witch craft” or magical, powerful beings. The reader is drawn into the book early on and, it quickly becomes a can’t put the book down, page turner. I was delighted to learn how a number of the loose ends from the previous book were resolved! I adore the setting - a small mountain town in northwestern Georgia, but the interesting characters were what pulled me into the story. Ella Mae’s aunts were a hoot, Loralyn was so wicked, and even Ella Mae's dog "Chewy" has a huge presence. I also enjoyed the paranormal elements in this book which continue to change and develop. This is a fabulous addition to this cozy mystery series, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Any new release by Ellery Adams is cause for celebration in my book, and this Charmed Pie Shoppe mystery is a winner right out of the starting gate! The author, also, included several delicious recipes (which I’m eager to bake. This book may be the best of the series to date! I highly recommend this book to those who appreciate a superbly written cozy mystery with a touch of magic! You won’t be disappointed. Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was given to me by the author in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

    Magic, Pie and Murder

I have been reading this series since the beginning and I noticed that they have become less cozy mystery and more fantasy stories. I enjoy the Pie background and the characters but the mysteries are weak. I was hoping that after the last book the series might return to more mystery but I was disappointed. In this one Ella has been asked to bake pies and teach classes for a women's club, The Camellia Club. Ella finds the president floating in the lake but her death is ruled an accident. Ella sets out to find out everything she can about the club and to discover if one of the members is a murderer. I figured out the who did it early but the reason for the murder did not make much sense to me. I did like the parts of the book that continue the relationship between Ella and Hugh. If you are looking for a traditional cozy mystery you will be disappointed in this book. If you like mysteries with a lot of magic and some romance you will enjoy this book. This series should be read in order. Enjoy I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

    Enchanting novel!

Breach of Crust by Ellery Adams is the fifth book in The Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series. Ella Mae LeFaye is getting ready to close up The Charmed Pie Shoppe for the day, but they are waiting on a customer who has ordered every pie on the menu. However, she has only taken one bite from each piece. The customer asks to speak with Ella Mae. Her name is Bea Burbank. Mrs. Burbank is president of the Camellia Club in Sweetbriar, Georgia. She is organizing their annual retreat. They are asking three different dessert chefs to teach the members recipes they can use in their latest fundraising cookbook (for scholarships and to help a young woman who was burned with her surgeries). Ella Mae, of course, agrees to help. The retreat will be held Havenwood so it is no trouble for Ella Mae. Ella Mae is also working to help Opal Garner. Opal is dying of cancer and she wants to see her daughter, Loralyn before she dies. Loralyn fled town and no one has seen her (or heard from her). She also happens to be Ella Mae’s enemy. Ella Mae, though, cannot refuse to help a dying woman. To help extend Opal’s life (or heal her), Ella Mae and friends start looking for a magical object. Will she be able to find one in time? Ella Mae is on her dock late at night and notices someone in the water. She dives in and finds the body of Bea Burbank. It turns out that their research for a magical object leads them right back to the Camellia Club (and want to guess what else Ella Mae finds). Ella Mae can solve Bea’s murder, find a magical object, and help Opal at the same time! Breach of Crust was a delight to read. I enjoyed every moment of this book, and I really did not want it to end. In order to understand what is going on in Breach of Crust, you do need to read the other books in The Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series (or you will be lost). Breach of Crust is well-written (as usual), has charming characters, romance (not just between Hugh and Ella Mae), humor, and some magic. Ellery Adams crafted an enchanting tale with Breach of Crust. I give Breach of Crust 5 out of 5 stars (which you know I rarely do). The ending in this novel will leave you smiling. I received a complimentary copy of Breach of Crust from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.
