  • An Inspiring Read

This novel deals with the painful, traumatic experience of childhood sexual abuse, and is both disturbing and heart-warming to read. I was expecting the novel to be written in a heavy, distressing and dark tone, and while the story does certainly deal with dark subject matter, which constantly sets an undertone of melancholy to the novel, there is a definite thread of hope running throughout the story at the same time. The story is predominantly told through diary entries, as the author recalls experiences from her past, and defining moments of her life. The writing style is clear and easy to follow, and I finished the novel in only a few hours, as the story gripped me so much I couldn’t put the novel down. I really liked the Life Lessons inserted into the story before each new section, as they really helped to give insight into the author’s journey and what she has learnt through her struggles of dealing with her past. I was pleasantly surprised that the story focused more on hope and faith, instead of solely delving into the traumatic, actual events of the sexual abuse. The novel is not a depressing read, rather it is one of uplifting hope and faith – that against all the odds, there is still joy and beauty to be had in life. I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a novel with depth and meaning, but also one which is ultimately positive and inspiring.

  • A Woman's Novel of Abuse and Recovery

Joan Eastman is put on bed rest for the length of her uncertain pregnancy and buys a diary to occupy her time and Breaking the Silence is what she reveals in her diary: a saga of growing up repressing psychological and sexual cruelty and falling into substance abuse as one reflection of the self-hatred she feels. Plenty of fiction and nonfiction sagas stop here, chronicling that abuse and its lasting impact; but the strength of Breaking the Silence lies in its ability to proceed past the pain to the other side, using the forthcoming birth of Eastman's child and her diary to foster the process of moving beyond past injustices into healing. Any who have struggled with past abuse, wondering how to shake its shackles and move into a future unencumbered by past tragedy, will relish the first-person diary entries in Breaking the Silence, which follows a way out of the maze. It's a powerful saga of a woman determined to undertake the work that will truly release her from self-destructive patterns and reactions that pass between generations. Juxtaposing the progression of pregnancy with life lessons learned from her experiences, Joan's story is a haunting survey of life, death, and everything in between, and a powerful saga not for those who would lead the unexamined life; but especially recommended for readers struggling with their own dark pasts and its implications for the future. Plenty of stories capture the experience. Too few chart the course between devastation and destruction to spiritual and emotional rebirth. Breaking the Silence is one such gem - and is a top revelation especially recommended for spirituality readers who want an account of finding not just a way out, but God.

  • Joan Diary of Tribulation and Hope

Joan East man or Joanie as she is commonly known longs for one thing to have a baby that she can call hers. Unfortunately, she needs her cervix to be sutured as doctor Marx notes in the office. After Losing Stephanie her first baby prematurely, her fears of losing another child are so real. Joan is put on a bed rest for about six months and in her diary, she walks us through her life as recounts what has transpired in her troubled life. She was molested as a young girl, and somehow the events are still clear in her mind. It is saddening of how Joan undergoes a lot of hardship in her life as she grows but the fortunate thing is that she never gives up. It is interesting how despite the many challenges she is still able to smile and hope for a bright future. She believes that everything happens for a reason, and God has a purpose for each one of us. It is a fantastic book of challenge and hope.

  • Heart touching

Breaking the Silence by Diamante Lavendar is weaved around Joan Eastman and throughout the entire story we can understand a lot about her life and the difficulties that she has faced since she was only two years old. From the beginning I felt this as a very emotional journey to the end. When I was reading this narrative tears came out from my eyes. As a helpless woman Joan has suffered a lot. She was abused sexually. There was no any pleasant shadow of memory in her childhood. Once she has done an abortion too. As a result of all these sorrows Joan has suffered not only physically but also mentally she is really weak. But for the second time she is carrying her own soul, her own blood in her womb. This time Joan just wants to be a great mother for her unborn child. Personally I am highly impressed by the author and I really appreciate the way she has created this emotional, heart touching story. I heartily recommend this novel for everyone with huge five stars.
