Broken Ground by Val McDermid : This is the first novel I have read by this author, I do know that she is quite popular. Alice and her husband arrive in the Highlands to search through a peat bog for the inheritance her grandfather buried. X marks the spot and with the help of a local, Hamish, they find not only the inheritance but also a very dead body. Karen Pirie of the Historic Crimes Unit is tasked with uncovering the murderer. There are two other smaller investigations that run concurrently with this mystery. I did enjoy the characters even though I felt that they were a bit on the cliched side. The mystery was a let down for me, we find out fairly early on what actually happened and you spend the rest of the book waiting for the police to catch up. It was not bad at all, just not very memorable. Thank you to Grove Atlantic and #Netgalley for #Brokenground, in return for my honest review.

    Bone Treasure

Detective Karen Pirie is a cold case murder closer. McDermid weaves two investigations for Karen to unwind while battling her superior's scrutiny. Even though this is part of a series; Broken Ground is very much a stand alone read. There was times the narrative was a bit slow but the skill of this author of getting everything told and tied up by the end made this worth picking up. "A copy of this book was provided by Grove Atlantic Monthly Press via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."

    Broken Ground

Broken Ground is the latest story about Detective Chief Inspector Karin Pirie by Val McDermid. Definitely a stand alone story, as I didn't realize it was part of a series until I was far into the book. Karin Pirie is an enjoyable character who the reader can relate to and enjoy following the bread crumbs as she does, to discover the culprit in cold cases. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. I was given an early copy to review.

    Engrossing, intricate, and deft!

In this latest novel by McDermid, Broken Ground, we head back to Edinburgh where DCI Pirie and her sidekick DC Murray from the Historic Cases Unit find themselves pursuing new evidence in the case of a serial rapist from the 80s; tasked with identifying a body discovered in a peat bog in the Highlands alongside relics from WWII; and inadvertently involved in a new case of premeditated, cold-blooded murder. The prose is gritty and descriptive. The characterization is superb with all the usual gang back including the intuitive, tenacious, Karen Pirie who’s still coping with the loss of her lover through nocturnal walks and designer gins. And the plot, including all the subplots, unravel and intertwine meticulously into an irresistible tale full of deception, abuse, deprivation, manipulation, mayhem, violence, and murder. Overall, Broken Ground is a highly entertaining, gripping, atmospheric thriller that highlights McDermid’s exceptional ability to write police procedurals that have well-drawn characters and edgy storylines. It is the fifth novel in the Inspector Karen Pirie series, and definitely one of my favourites.
