Dreams can become nightmares. Magic can be curses, Kids can be murderers? This story unfolds like a fairy tale. Slowly, layer by layer, more is revealed. Of a friendship three girl have, where one of them isn’t just a nice girl, but sometimes can be scary and mean. Nobody knows what happened in the woods, the night Summer died. But then, everybody in town is sure, Brynn, Mia and Owen did it. They killed Summer and got away with it. After five years the three old friends meet again for the first time and more than anything they want to find the real killer. There are a lot of twist and turns, and sometimes it’s as if it might have been Mia or Brynn or Owen, killing Summer that might. But when the real killer, the Shadow, is revealed, it’s not somebody I had on my list. I was hooked from the start on this roller coaster of emotions and kind of fairy tale and loved it. Highly recommended!

I listened to the audiobook version of this book and thought the audio was very well done. All too often, I find the narrator of an audiobook just fails to captivate me as much as if I were reading the book. But these narrators did a fantastic job. I’m glad I listened to the audiobook. The story was just okay for me. I found the ending to be a bit anti-climactic. I’m not sure why, as we did find out who did it and I didn’t guess who it was. Maybe because of who it was – it was just not as exciting as if it would have been a different character I guess? I’m not sure. I just feel underwhelmed by the ending. The characters are what drove the story, in my opinion. I loved how diverse the main characters were and felt it added a lot to the story. Mia, Brynn, and Summer (and even Abby) are all quite different, but they all struggle in some way and they struggle even in their relationships (with each other and with others), but they are still best friends. It was interesting to read about all of them. Lauren Oliver did a really good job with these characters. Overall, I enjoyed this book, but was a bit disappointed by the story (oh, and of course I wouldn’t have minded the romance aspects to be a bit more developed too, but that’s just me!).
