    Superb. A dystopia.

This is Dian’s story. A strong skilled, surprisingly sensitive woman with a remarkable affinity for dogs she part of a close knit community and takes responsibility for its security, including leaving to investigate potential new members. The trip takes her to unexpected places, meeting people who change her life and then she becomes part of a force of change in a world where few boy children live to see the age of three. The characters are rich and complex. The setting and plot intriguing and believable. Don’t expect to be able to put this book down once you start reading.

    Great scifi drama, woman-positive

This is a stunning post apocalyptic feminist novel of great dramatic and emotional power. The central character is fearless and independent and she learns a great deal about the wider world in her West Coast quest, accompanied by two mighty dogs. Room for a sequel; I would love to know if the fierce ladies with pain sticks were defeated for good. Laurie King is a fine writer on any day and this is truly memorable. A bit Stephen King (very imaginative and quite scary) but more believable.
