    Chaos Rises #1

5 Stars for Pippa DaCosta’s first book in the Chaos Rises series, #1 Chaos Rises. Pippa gifted me an ARC copy (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review. We’re back in Muse’s world—after the fall of the Netherworld Veil. But instead of being in Boston, we’re on the West Coast. When the veil fell, there were half bloods at the institute that escaped, and not even Adam knew happened to them. Well, spoiler alert: They survived and are living in LA. Gem and Del are twins. But not just any twins. Special twins. They’ve always been together, and as far as Gem is concerned, they always will be. She needs Del and he needs her. To be apart is unthinkable, and something that Gem hopes never happens. You see, she’s the only person that can help her brother keep things together. Literally. It’s a new day, but with new rules. New demons, (and who can’t get enough of them?!), new half bloods, and a whole new story. Gem, Del, Torrent and others. Torrent is a demon with a past that not even Gem can guess at. When he shows up to “offer” help, Gem isn’t sure if she should take it, but, like anyone who has survived The Fall, looking out for #1 is what you do. I LOVED this book! I finished it in 2 reading sessions. I couldn’t put it down! If you haven’t read the Veil series, I suggest you do, but I think you could pick up this book and be able to follow along pretty well. All of Pippa’s characters are amazing and complex. Just when you think you know how one of them will react, the exact opposite happens. In the daemon world, nothing, and no one, are what they seem. Come join us as Chaos Rises. Independent Reviewer Jackie Huntington

    Well-written, action-packed urban fantasy

This is a spin-off to the Veil series, which I haven’t read, but it didn’t impact on my enjoyment of the book. I was taken on an emotional roller coaster ride into Gem’s world as she adapts to the real world after escaping the Institute, and tries desperately to find her missing brother. Gem is fighting the mental demons of her life at the Institute whilst trying to suppress her own demon which she controls through medication. In contrast, Torrent has learnt to live with his demon which he fully controls. Torrent is sexy and powerful, and Gem finds him unpredictable and intriguing, as well as crucial in her search for her brother. I love the special of relationship between Gem and her brother, Dell, and can understand her anxiety at not having him by her side for the first time in her life. If you love a well-written, action-packed urban fantasy with an intriguing mystery, kick-ass heroine, heart-stopping suspense and smouldering romance to boot, then this book is for you. I eagerly await the next instalment so that I can my fix of Gem and Torrent, as well as getting to know Del better.

    Fantastic UF!

I'm a huge fan of Ms. DaCosta's and I couldn't wait to get back into the veil world. We are in the aftermath of the veil falling and being closed so that leaves Gem and her brother Del on their own, running from the Institution. The twins are devoted to one another: "We’d always been together. We would always be together. Always. Apart…apart we were dangerous." Things go awry, like a true Pippa novel and Gem struggles with the idea of not being her own person while getting help from those she doesn't trust: “You know half bloods are owned. It’s the way of things. It’s always been the way of things. Just because the veil closed doesn’t mean anything has changed.” Chaos does indeed arise and the fall out is something Gem will have to fight with a little help from the Prince of Pride himself! "Demons lied. That was the only truth that mattered." There wasn't a cliff hanger but a definite plot hook that leaves you not just wanting but needing the next book! Well done Ms. DaCosta, I truly enjoyed the beginning of this new series in the Veil world.

    I really enjoyed the story

I enjoyed the story, it was your standard urban fantasy lite on the romance and centered around demons and half demons. It does a good job developing a set of characters and establishing a new "universe" while hooking you to want more. I will definitely grab the next book in this series when it comes out.
