  • An intriguing adventure story

Reviewed by Alyssa Elmore for Readers' Favorite A mysterious mansion on a hill overlooking a small forested town holds secrets concerning the disappearance of a dozen people in the thrilling middle-grade novel, Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters (The Varcolac's Diary) by D.C. McGannon and C. Michael McGannon. The residents of Hunter's Grove are on edge. For the past two years, the townspeople are vanishing, and the number has been increasing at an alarming rate. When socially awkward Charlie Sullivan starts having horrific nightmares about a place he's never seen, fighting monsters he doesn't believe exist, and losing a friend he doesn't have, he thinks he's beginning to lose it. Then he meets Nash Stormstepper, a Native American kid with a chip on his shoulder. Together, they decide to uncover the secret behind all the disappearances. While conducting research, Charlie discovers that they aren't the only kids determined to find answers concerning the disappearing people. Before Charlie knows it, he has become the leader of an unlikely team on a mission to find the key that unlocks the mystery behind the town's fearful happenings. Only, the more they investigate, the more they realize that they have a date with destiny in another realm. Five children enter a portal. How many will come back? Harry Potter meets Trixie Belden in the intriguing middle-grade fantasy novel, Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters (The Varcolac's Diary) by D.C. McGannon and C. Michael McGannon. With captivating characters and a solid plotline, this book is bound to engage even the most reluctant of readers. Authors D.C. and C. Michael are a father-son writing team that blends their knowledge of the paranormal and mythological with humor to create thrilling adventures. As the first book in the series, it is outstanding. I look forward to seeing what happens in the following books. I appreciated how the authors described some of the mythology and paranormal inclusions; especially the Ley Lines. Many similar elements will resonate with fans of the Harry Potter series. This book is written for readers aged 9-18 and is suitable for both middle grade and young adult readers.
