  • Movie stars and murder

Carrie Singleton works at the Clover Ridge library and arranges all of the adult programs, so when a woman asks to host a session on psychic abilities, she books a date. The seats fill up fast as the locals are interested in learning more. But it is the resident library ghost, Evelyn, that alerts Carrie to the young woman’s true identity as a former resident of Clover Ridge whose father was murdered 20 years ago. There’s also a movie being filmed in town and Carrie has a front row seat since her Mother’s new husband, Tom, has a role in the film. Turns out Tom’s co-star is his former fiancé who is flirting heavily with him right in front of his wife, who slaps her and threatens the hussy. It’s going to be a few tense weeks of filming, as if things weren’t already tense between Carrie and her Mother. Carrie is blindsided when her new friend, the psychic is found murdered. Who would kill her? It’s not like anyone else knew who she really was. But when Tom’s flirty co-star is murdered as well, Carrie begins to look into who did the deed, as she wonder if these two murders are connected to the murder 20 years ago. But will Carrie find one murdered or three? Or will she become the fourth victim? A well written series with family dynamics that everyone can relate to. A solid whodunit with enough suspects and red herrings to keep you guessing right until the very end.

  • Checked Out For Murder!

I loved this cozy mystery. The characters were quirky and fun to read. There were just enough red herrings to keep me guessing without getting confusing. The plot was filled with intrigue, suspense, and enough twists to last until the final page. I can't wait for the next one! I received an advanced reader's copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

  • Intriguing and heart touching

Checked out for Murder touched my heart as much as it captured my avid interest. I loved the newest novel in the series as I have every Haunted Library Mystery. Every book seems to get better and I was sold from the first one. Allison Brooks always offers characters that I really want to get to know but this time, just as Carrie and I were becoming acquainted with Daphne who seemed like she would fit right in, the fabulous Ms. Brooks and some unknown person stole her from us. Although her ex was in town before she was killed, Carrie can't help feeling that Daphne's death was connected to her father's murder years earlier. With very little to go on, Carrie inched her way through a maze of distractions and limited clues. A second death turned the spotlight on Carrie's mother, so actress announced that she and her much younger actor husband will move into her librarian daughter's home for greater privacy. Those familiar with the series know how much that decision thrilled Carrie, so she had more reason than ever to uncover the murderer quickly. The twists and turns and red-herrings kept me guessing and reading. I did not want to put that book down. Our favorite library cat was around to delight us, and our favorite library ghost dropped in to make us think. Evelyn had known the victim’s family when they lived in Clover Ridge years earlier, so insight was helpful in guiding our amateur detective's search. I am happy to see that, while Dylan still has to travel, he was around more. He is a great partner for Carrie. I received an ARC from NetGalley much to my excitement and I am looking forward to sharing this special book with my friends. #NetGalley #CheckedOutforMurder

  • 4th book in series

Checked Out for Murder by Allison Brook is the 4th book in The Haunted Library Mystery series. It can be read as a standalone if you are new to this series. I thought Checked Out for Murder contained good writing and developed characters. My favorite character is Evelyn Havers, the ghost who lives at the library. She is delightful. I liked that we saw more of Evelyn in this book. Two murders take place in this story. We all know Carrie will investigate despite being told repeatedly by boyfriend, Dylan Avery and Lt. John Mathers to stay out of the case. There are multiple suspects and a variety of clues to aid in readers in solving the crimes. Evelyn provides good insight and intel that helped Carrie’s investigation (and John’s). Carrie certainly has her hands full in Checked Out for Murder with her work, Smoky Joe feeling spring fever, her mother, Dylan traveling, two murders, and her father’s surprise visit. Carrie will need a long weekend away after her mother leaves town. Mother and daughter have different personalities which can lead to clashes. They get a chance to do some bonding in this tale and maybe Brianna will change her ways (or not). I do want to let you know that the story does contain some mild foul language. I hope Dylan will be more open to Carrie’s investigating in the future. He needs to realize that a leopard does not change its spots. Checked Out for Murder is an entertaining whodunit with a temptress thespian, a manipulating mother, a fugitive feline, a perished psychic, a troubled beau, and a curious Carrie.

  • entertaining

I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an advance reader copy of this story. Checked Out For Murder, by Allison Brook, is available at booksellers on 9-8-2020. Unfortunately this is book 4 of 4 in Ms. Brooks A Haunted Library Mystery. I so enjoyed the plot and characters that I'm wishing for more. It's time to start at the beginning with book 1. Checked Out For Murder is intended as a stand alone story in a series but I think coming in at the end left questions. I can't believe I'm saying this but a little more background would have helped. Library or bookstore murder mysteries are my favorite, I'm a former librarian. Our heroine works in a library to die for, it's big and has all kinds of programs. A book lovers dream. Her boyfriend is perfect, if only he was real. The whole small town is written as friendly and everyone knows everyone. Kind of like Mayberry and a place I'd like to live. This was an enjoyable weekend read. #AllisonBrook #CheckedOutForMurder #AHauntedLibraryMystery #Netgalley #CrookedLaneBooks
